The simple point is that while many of us don't care if the car has a title that matches the year of the body some guys are pretty hung up on it.
Glass 23 T that started this thread. The owner could probably had a "street rod" title in two days o effort even if he had to load the car on a trailer and haul it to a NSRA event where he could get it inspected If the inspector wasn't close by. All the receipts and paperwork in order and trot off to the dmv and get it registered.

Same thing with the little A coupe. It might be titled as a streetrod that is in the form of a Model A coupe instead of a 31 Model A Ford but it would be legal and you wouldn't have to worry about someone from the dmv showing up at your door with a warrent.
The NSRA safety check list is on their website http://nsra-usa.com/index.php/site/section/C11 and most of it is just good common sense when building a rod anyhow. Years ago I used to keep a copy pinned to the wall in my garage when I built my 23 T in Texas. And yep even with a steel 1923 Ford body salvaged out of a field it had a Texas assembled vehicle title.

  3. now a days the law isn't even involved in mich...you walk in, write down the numbers for the car, vin or body stamping works, and they run it for stolen and leins..if there are none, then it's $15 to get your title..i received mine in 7 days, that's including the weekend.......i found the production number stamped into a welded to the main shell section of the car...they said that worked fine, due to it being able to be checked if it was ever stolen .......FROM ME.............gotta love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!my title says 1938 fiat, no kit car or any of that bulll.......

  4. I am having nothing but trouble getting a transferable registration from NY. I think they are just screwing with me for fun now.

    Well than..
Glad as hell I didnt go that route when i found my car...it just didnt feel right if you know what i mean.

I wanted a clean title to my car way before i even took it apart to start on the build.
Glad as hell I went the legal route to get it.

Im not saying i wasnt tempted..but when I looked into doing it right it really wasnt all that hard. And now I can rest easy knowing i will not be putting all my hard time and money into something that isnt registered or paper work aint right on..hard as hell to sleep at night knowing your baby isnt up to snuff when it comes to the law..

Why would anyone want to build a car spend all that time and money when the paperwork aint right or isnt done is beyond me.

to me thats the first thing you get done..than start the project.

    mine was a complete 28 Tudor..but still..

buying a registration..from some guy in NY..those registrations were re - done each year for the same car..so its possible for alot of people to have the same registration for different cars all trying to get titles for them ..not something i want my project money spent on thats for sure.

    You want a Title.

seems like scary shit to hang your hard earned money on..glad i live in michigan...HA! thought I'd never say that

I have had two cars in the past few years that were TOTAL basket cases and/or didn't have ANY paperwork of ANY sort AT ALL! I am in CA, and all I needed was a VIN and a confirmation from a peace officer that the VIN I used was stamped on the car(there is a form you get at the DMV that the cop signs). Then I filled out a Statement of Facts to clarify where the car had been for the past 40 years while it was out of the DMV records. I needed NO inspection, NO bill of sale, nor did I have to modernize the old rig. I got a clear title for a 1930 Ford, done deal...and it cost WAY under $100. I am pretty sure most states have more than one way of getting an old car registered with a clear title. Your friend needs to do a little more research...or he can do the right thing and give his car to a HAMB'r!

Yeah I agree. It isn't like the VIN is stamped all over the body, frame and all the parts. If somebody asks just play dumb. I find it hard to believe they are going to cross state lines to hunt down some tax paying citizen who may have bought a bogus title not knowing it was bogus at the time.

It's your local DMV that will tag you. Some guy out here used a title company to get a title for his '57 T-bird. After a year, DMV revoked the registration. He will now have to get his car inspected by the CHP.

Arkansas will print you a brand NEW title if no registartion can be found on a car 25 yrs old or older.

  12. I guess getting a title for a car you build from scatch (parts from many sources) is different from getting title to an existing car that may not now but at one time did have a title? I talked with our local tag office lady on how to title our roadster project once it's ready for the road. She gave us a state form where we itemize the different expenses (body, engine, tranny, bolts, paint, etc.) and using the total ammount our tax and title cost is calculated. I think we can label (year, model and etc.) the car as whatever we want - its up to us. Not too much of a hassle it seems? Anyway we will be crossing this bridge in a few months.

Well in PA if you're building a car from scratch you have to have it pretty complete and pass the inspection first BEFORE they will title it.

Don't let that one lady at DMV ruin your day. Every time I've ever talked to those dimwits I get a different answer. I got the air bag story and all that. It took some doing but I just got my title transfer and didn't want registration until it was done. That way all I needed was proof of insurance and bam, new title. Just don't give up. Keep trying and talking until you get it done. There is a way, you just have to find it. Most of the people answering the phones don't know all the laws by any means.

I just went through this same thing with a trailer I bought. The previous owner said just get a shop made registration (as opposed to titling). Well, I go to DMV and they gave me a packet of paper to fill out. I had to got to DPS cops for an inspection and the cop says thats a manufactured trailer not shop made. So back to DMV, I had to go to a hearing with the tax assessor present. Then to DOT for a assigned VIN and then back to DMV to pay the reg. and taxes and other BS but, I got it. All this over a $600 trailer. One supervisor told me not to give up and keep trying until it was done. I don't know of any "registry" for people trying to do the right thing. If you haven't broken any laws then you don't need to worry. Like I said, don't give up. Good luck.
