I’ve never sewn anything before. Just finished this practice seat bottom. I started sewing November 30th 2025. No schooling or mentoring Just wasted a few videos and asked a couple questions from a couple guys who are upholsters. It’s not perfect but came out decent.
I often wonder if Bill Colgan just didn't think about the window cranks when he build the door features for the Dream Truck... It wasn't fun rolling those windows up and down.....
Man, I sure wish I could see a picture of how it's hung there. Sure looks awesome. Is that Dennis' Chevy?
Usually headliners like that are done by adding a plywood under layer to the car that uses glue, staples, magnets or clips in the middle section of the headliner then the edges are stretched like a regular headliner.. Here is one Sean at FatLuckys did. You can see how the inner cut out section is held in with clips and brackets around the edge. And the headliner attached to that inner section before being installed. And installed.
@drdave You were reading my mind, and @K13 Thanks for that behind the curtain look at how that's done.
so are you saying there is metal s***ched or somehow attached to the headliner material that affixes to the multiple magnets?-if that is what i am seeing---or am i way off track!
No the headliner is attached to that inner wood piece that has the two cutouts, usually glued. That inner wood piece will then be attached to the wood part above it that is permanently attached to the car. There are multiple ways that can be attached Glue and staples around the outside edge being the most common but sometimes clips can be used and for smaller ones like trucks I have seen guys use magnet attached to both wood pieces. Usually those ones I have seen using magnets are a solid second layer without the cutouts so the whole thing just snaps in place with the magnets. Here is a picture of how I did my truck may be a little more clear. I used panel clips. I then attached the actual headliner to the part with the cutouts, the darker section that all the panel clips are in (glued and stapled) and then with a great deal of swearing and cursing got all the clips pushed back up into the plywood base.
Thanks for all that @K13!! I took a crack at the "Hirohata" headliner in my 51 Merc based off some pics I had seen of the headliner install on an old Barris car (I think), but I wasn't happy with the results (partly based on the way I hung it and more related to my sewing skills lol) so have been "shopping" for better ways when I redo it.
