Thanks ! I was born and raised in an old fashioned workshop, I'm glad that you like my work so far, I'll keep posting photos, my goal is to make it run for christmas so I can have some fun in the gravel streets of my hood with no license plates on it hahah
What a great job you are doing........rebuild your water pump.......we are really spoiled in RBI’s country when it comes to parts for our old cars...if our local auto store doesn’t have a new one in stock and has to order it for next day delivery...we’re mad. I can’t imagine all the work you have to do to build a US car.......really glad to have you as a member of the H.A.M.B. Tom Sent from my iPad using H.A.M.B.
What a score, sure it has rust but most of them do. If you still have the water pump off it would probably pay to check the water distribution tube (behind the water pump in the block), apparently they rust out and crud can build up in the block around them. Here in Australia we only got sedans and utes, all based off Plymouth bodies but dodge and Desoto variants were also available. Our Chrysler royals were also based off the Plymouth platform and were offered with factory poly V8s, they also added a wagon in the royal line up. I'm currently building a custom Chrysler Royal
That sounds pretty good, my plymouth is not an export, Uruguayan legislation back in that time was that you ordered any car you want from the current catalog and only that car you wanted was imported to the country. I've got a friend building a AMC Rebel hardtop 66' originally with a 327 and 4 speed which is no longer there and there were only 7500 produced as I acknowledge. My water pump is installed and I cleaned as much as I could before that, now it has a minor leak through the bearing which I'll be repairing very soon. Send photos of that Royal !!
The front doors were extended 8 inches, roof chopped 2 inches in front and 2.5 in the rear. The front guards are Plymouth uppers with royal lower arches (working with what I had) and Humber Hawk headlights more recently
That's looking awesome, it looks better with that rear window style for sure! what engine are you running??
Thanks mate, I had a lot of help from a good mate to get it roughed out. The rear window was just to make the chop easier, I cut up a 54 export Desoto (basically a Plymouth with a Desoto grille) for that and a bunch of other parts. Its getting a 250 cube flat 6 with an overdrive 3 speed for now because I've got one, it was originally a 313 poly V8 with a 2 speed push button auto.
Some progress, no progress at all haha. Just moved the car by its own means for the first time, next week i'll upload some more photos, now it's still looking raw but at list it moves and has a roof over it .
Cleaning the front end. The process is slow but enjoyable. Need tires ! at list matching size tires haha...
Here's a '53 I found for sale in our local Facebook Marketplace. Car is located in Warrensburg, MO (along with some other vehicles). The seller says: "The '53 Plymouth 2-door is a complete car minus a few trim pieces. No title. Rough. I will take $700 for that car."
Inspect around those front shock mounts very closely. Seems to me I cracked a frame around them once. Interesting project... gotta love those flat 6's.
This video has a month or so but is worth sharing, now the car is on its feet for a while, trying to get it braking and probably testing it on the street in a few days
Also I've received new front lenses from the states, still waiting for the rear ones. I've put a cheap headlight ring from vw, it is provisory, I want ford 52-53-54 rings but haven't found a pair yet.
Finally got some time to make progress, disassembled the front brakes, got a pair of all terrain tires for the rear wheels real cheap (now they are in the front for a while). I got the car inside the shop after 3 months being outside haha, also my father helped me weld some cracks, repaired both doors so they close really smooth now, painted part of the frame with antirust paint (don't know how do you call it in english sorry haha) and can't remember what else did I do, lots of stuff to do yet.
Thanks ! Really dig the chop on yours, you got a really unique piece there , what drivetrain is it running? gonna like your fb page
Progress or no progress... everything is ready to put the front end again but I'll wait until I put brakes on it, the pump is outside, piston is broken as it is en every wheel cylinder so I'll have to build them. Got some backup bezels with lenses, I ordered some brand new lenses from the usa but I want to change a bezel that is not so good in the car, just realized there are two types... and the ones I got are different, I needed the ones with screws, anyways I'm planning to use the one I needed and maybe just change the outter part and keep the original bezel of the car. I got the trunk handle too ! and a friend got some headlight rings and trims for his 55' dodge coronet (2door sedan).
I have no brakes at all, some wheel cylinders broken, had to order a complete set from oldmoparts.com. Hopefully I'll be driving in a month when the set arrives, I wonder if there is any other way to make the car stop with the emergency brake. Somebody tried to repair the body but didn't finish as shown in these photos .
I hope you are able to fix that bad bodywork. That car deserves to have a proper restoration. Keep it up, friend!
Thanks !! Nothing that the torch can't repair. Is there much people in the states welding with oxy-acetilene still today??
Didn't do much lately due to holidays. Started welding floor pans, brake pump is on its place and working flawlessly thanks to argentinian rebuild kits, still waiting for the wheel cylinders that must arrive next week, got N.O.S lenses for the rear. Photos speak for themselves.
I need some help, my windshield is a bit whiteish on the perimeter, is there anything I can do to clear it or should I get used to it.
That is the result of delamination of the windshield layers. Two sheets of glass with a thin clear plastic sheet (known as laminated safety glass) bonded between them. When the edges delaminate, the plastic gets whitish gray and often bubbles appear. I do not know of any method of correcting that, other than a replacement glass. If you try to find a replacement windshield, be aware that in spite of their similar appearance, there is a small dimensional difference in height between some body types in the '53/'54 models.. as I recall. thanks, the chop is not my work. i got it that way and thats main reason i got it. running stock engine and trans, three on the thre and no overdrive but got the rear end from a 70-80s aspen i think and that makes the rpm nice on the highways
This is cool. I remember when you first posted the car, but I did not realize that you are in Uruguay. Keep working, and best of luck to you down there.
