Finally, after three years in the making, I fired my flatty for the first time yesterday. Startled the hell out of me when it roared to life and idled smooth and easy. I felt like Gene Wilder, IT'S ALIVE!

    Here's where it all started..

    And now...

Here's a couple of quick clips for grins, open headers, no pipes yet.

    sounds SWEET!

I know what you mean about startling, I've had a few projects that would sit quietly for a year or two and then one day THEY SPEAK!

    congrats! it looks great too!

Thanks for the complements, I'm still giddy that the damn thing runs!

There are a few bugs to fix, the water pump didn't seal to the block and is leaking quite a bit, one of the exhaust manifold studs is leaking coolant, forgot the thread sealer. And, the rear main is leaking which really pisses me off, I pulled the engine to fix it once already, didin't want to have to do it again.

Other than that, it runs quite well not having adjusted the carbs or timing yet. [IMG]

    plmczy-

I have a pair of smithy's, that I was going to run with a crossover to take the "raspy" sound out. But, I want it to be mellow, and not have that rackackack sound. More like a criscraft boat. So, I'm thinking of a two in two out muffler, with both pipes running parallel all the way to the rear bumper on the p***enger side. Not sure what I'll end up with...

I kept a copy of that straight on shot you posted a while back in my "ART of the Automobile" file.
    That engine is gorgeous!

Is there a hole on those water pumps that is supposed to be left open for Agricultural use only. Your water pump leak sounds real familiar but I don't remember why. I changed mine out as soon as I got the car and I think I had the same problem. I will check my manual tomorrow. Let me know if you get it figured out. Did you get one of the NAPA pumps or is it a different one?

Is the rear main leak coming from the coming from that neoprene seal? Are you going to let it "set up" or is it leaking like it is more severe?

Once again it is good to hear it fire. Your motor is an inspiration for me that is for sure!

Congrats to a fellow flat sixer. I gotta flat 6 ford, and boy was a grinnin when I fired it up for the first time. I say run straight pipes and dump under the car. I have straight pipes on mine that dump right at the front p***enger door. That is a sound like no other, and I would definitely recommend it if you don't mind not being able to talk in the car [IMG]. Congrats again

They are Holley/Webber 5200 carbs, from Tom Langdon of Langdon's Stovebolt Six. I haven't had time to really mess with them yet, but according to Tom, these carbs are just about perfect for this engine in terms of CFM. The primaries are smaller than the original Ball and Ball carbs, so they are better in a pair than the Ball and Ball units.

    Justin-

I bought the water pump from Vintage Power Wagons, and if I remember right, there was a plug on the side somewhere. but I think the leak is a bad seal to the block, as i can't see where it is coming from aside from the flow of coolant coming from under the pump and flowing down the block and dripping off of the oil pan.

I used the neoprene in-block type seal, not the face mount version. I can't tell yet if it is the seal, or the rear main bearing cap "plug" I made with JB Weld. Not sure if you remember, but the rear main bearing cap had a hole about 3/8" in diameter through the cap into the oil pan side. I pulled the engine, removed the pan and cap, and plugged the hole with JB Weld. The leak looks like it is only at the bottom side of the crank, the rest looks dry... I'm going to leave it for now and if it doesn't stop I will deal with it when I get the car up on a rack for the exhaust. I don't want to do it laying under the car in my garage!

In the photo below, you can see the JB Weld plug in the cap, the new seal, and the three holes where the old rope face mount seal mounted and covered the hole. If it doesn't stop leaking, I will install the face mount type seal, I have one that is also neoprene and face mount. I don't see how the JB Weld filled hole could be leaking, I even coated the outside face with silacone.
