Does anyone run one of these, and if so, do they feel strange to you? Shifts fine once I'm moving, but seems like I have to use quite a bit of throttle before she gets going. Is it slipping, or am I just not used to this set up? It's in a mega-heavy '64 Olds with a 394. Trans fluid looks nice and red-clean, there's no filter in it, just a pickup tube with a screen. Any suggestions?

Here's a (bad) pic of the car for inspiration.

There's no stator in the fluid coupling, so it doesn't have the torque multiplication of a "normal" automatic ****** at low speeds, like you're used to.

Wow, that's great to know. You really know your ****. Thanks for the tip. I guess the car's fine, it just felt different than other automatics I've driven.

Is this the same sort of Hydramatic as in my 55 Pontiac? I rode in Ragdoll's 55 Pontiac in Paso and that thing shifted SO HARD! I almost got out screaming at the thing! It didn't shift nice and smooth like my Powerglide at all! Is that normal? What should I expect?

you might want to adjust the kickdown linkage.

I think a 64 Olds would be the twin turbo hydromatic. I believe it had two torque converters back to back. Also known as the slim jim I think. I had one in a 63 Olds and it always shifted and acted funny. I am old and stupid so all this may be wrong.

yeah, it's also known as the dual-coupling, which means it has two fluid couplings.

Yeah, they're also know as a Piece of ****, if I remember the correct wording. I hate these things. Everytime I drive one, I hope it makes it another 2 miles before it ****s the bed...they freak me out completely.
Brandy..the 55 Olds/Pontiac ****** is the slant-pan hydro. It's a 4 speed automatic that will shift hard if incorrectly adjusted. After bring the ****** into correct adjustment, it will shift hard but not as hard. Expect 2nd gear rubber from one under full throttle shifts.
Really, they're not a bad shifting ****** but those 56-64 Olds/Pontiac slim Jims take approximately 43 mintues to shift from one gear to another and they feel like they're slipping all the time to me...also, the gear ratios are wierd! The engine will wind up in first and fall about 4000 rpm when it finally completes the 2nd gear shift. The shift into 4th gear is imperseptible...feels like 3rd is just slipping......

I have a jetaway hydramatic in my 1962 caddy. Same thing...mine varies on use and operating temps as to how and when it shifts. sometimes smoothly, sometimes hard, sometimes early, sometimes late or not at all where I have to shift into N then back into D to get final gear. They are unique year to year and brand of car for parts. I dumped some trans-x into mine recently and that helped some. At least it works for me on a daily basis...

when it goes south I have the option of using a wilcap adaptor and running a turbo400 or 700r4 at least.

    good luck
