I am looking for info on switching to pointless ignition.not msd but hall effect I am looking for factual information from anyone who has done this not people who may have heard about it or read about it but actually have it in use.thanks
I had, notice the word had, a Pertronix ignition along with the 50,000 volt coil and it worked flawlessly for 6 years and then in the turn lane in a very busy intersection at 5 PM it decided to die, it's darn near 95 degrees and horns are blaring an there is nothing I can do except push my car across 4 lanes of traffic and roll into a CVS parking lot. Roll back shows up and gets me home, I removed the Pertronix and have not looked back, they are great when working but if it quits you can get home like you can with points. I also used the Pertronix on my 1932 pickup and never had any problems, the exact same product, that's why I used it on the wagon. HRP
thanks but do not want any change other than the trigger.pretty simple to do just want input from someone who has done it.may be more to it than I am thinking if so oh well.I do not want to change from 6 volt either positive ground but that should not affect what I want to do.
That's exactly what I did, you ask had anyone done the conversion, I converted the stock distributor but added a hotter coil. HRP
i had a pertronix ignitor 1 in my henry j for 18 years and it finaly died. can't get much better than that.
no that would I think require 12 volts a****st other things like cap etc.I just want to use a trigger other than points.it may be a mr.phelps type quest but it keeps me thinking right or wrong.I am not sure how to trip the switch.I see in pictures of pertronics 12 volt kit it looks like a collar? that slips over shaft in distributor to trigger the switch possibly not sure why they do not show it in 6 volt kit probably in kit just not shown.
Jeff I believe he deals in electronic conversions.while I have seen his name mentioned favorably over the years.I do not want a electronic conversion just to change to an optical trigger from points.as I replied to burly it may be a mission impossible type thing.if I am not mistaken he is recovering from a health problem and he is up to his eyeballs with back orders and changing workshop to a downsized version.
I get what youre after now, but why go that route over an electronic conversion? Or just stay points which is an easy roadside fix
.your opinion of easy is different than mine at my 7 decades plusI take you have not tried on a y blockthe way they placed it at back keeps the water off but at the expense of my back.but it is more for the future if my kids need to do it and I am not there to coach them and with most of the old school mechanics gone the way of the dodo bird if it was 12 volts it would be a mote point but PW and the radio converted to am-fm cost coin I do not want to throw away.another thing that Jeff touched on the offshore condensers in future.may have to find telephone booth mr.phelps used.or try getting the man with the bullwhip to aid meappreciate your question and attempt to help
I have done it on several Y blocks and recently too on a 6v positive ground car (you'll note my avatar is an early Y block advert). If you really want the ease of maintenance for the kids, a 12v conversion and electronic is by far the best route. You can do a 12v conversion fairly cheaply if you stay away from those "all inclusive bolt on fix all your woes kits" and piece the parts together off the info in the sticky on this page. If its really a long run ordeal for them then money spent isnt wasted. That being said the 6v pertronix stuff is very problematic, almost a 50/50 split on people with success and people without, I'm in the latter and went back points with a 57+ distributor and intake combo and its better than i could've hoped for. The Achilles heel of our early Y blocks is that damn load-o-matic distributor, even with electronic or other conversions its a pain.
Also if you want to try pertronix I have a 6v one listed for sale, I have upgraded to 12v and its collecting dust If you want a go at it for cheaper than what a parts store will charge
the bigger problem I am looking at is removing the cap as I have the wires running through the factory looms?.not a hell of a lot of excess wire to play with.to say nothing of the spot it is in.challenges like this make life interestingagain I appreciate your input
with me being north of the border it might be a problem buying it .I do not have paypal have not since the bay changed their format years ago.like I said earlier it may be a impossible task.the 12 volt conversion which would simplify things it is not an option for me.as I have power windows and a modified radio(am-fm) they are both 6 volt positive ground.the thought of the relays and switches would drive me crazy if possible keeping the positive ground on them and I doubt pertronics makes a 12 volt positive ground anyway.makes life interesting if nothing else
