So heres what I'm dealing with. I have a stock 1936 Ford with all original wiring (but new) with the original style generator. So I recently rewired the car to all factory specs with Mac's auto parts and the original wiring diagram from the book in the car. Super cut and dry. The car was discharging with the switch off but charging when running. So after some looking I noticed the contacts in the generator cut out was sticking sometimes. So I just ordered the diode kit and converted it to solid state. And problem solved everything worked. But my buddy I did this for ended up wanting to go back to the original style cut out, so we did. Hooked it and sure enough, I was no longer getting power out of the generator. Since I know it was charging fine I dont think I need to adjust the 3rd brush but probably gotta repolorize the generator. I've found many how to videos on YouTube but nothing that old. So anyone want to explain the process to me?
with a jump wire clip it on the battery terminal on regulator then touch the field terminal bamm done..
The field coils must be magnetized to work and they must be magnetized in the right direction. Usually this is done by connecting the field coils to power for a few second. Each manufacturer has their own procedure. It only needs to be done if the generator has been apart, or out of service for years, or in your case it may have accidentally been polarized in reverse.
connect field wire to battery hot, generator should 'motor',spin on its own,old trick for polarizing and checking armature and field windings. Pull the belt first and only motor for a second.
