Hi, As my username hints, I am a Chevy guy but am gathering parts for a 27 T Coupe that I have and am planning on running a Pontiac. I have a line on a 1959 / 1960 reverse flow block and crank as well as a Six Duece Offy intake with carburetors (which need to be gone through etc) Is the 389 worth building? will this intake also work on say a late 60's 400 motor? Plan will be to build it as a street / strip car that someone would have campaigned in that era mid/late 60's. I appreciate the info! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Regarding Pontiac V8's, there are some differences over the years but basically, they are very similar from 326 ci all the way thru 455 ci (clear as mud?). The super-duty and factory competition engines had some special parts..........There is no such thing as a "small block" and "big block" because they are all the same basic design through all the displacements. Pontiac engines are known for their torque. There are also other threads here with some valuable information..........go fishing. On the top end of the engines, from what i know, you should match heads and intakes from same year groups. Intake bolting is different (early to late) and water cross over porting changes slightly. Most aftermarket multi-carb intakes are for the early heads. Some heads are preferred over others, you just have to do your homework and decide on which option is best for you. Edelbrock also sells aluminum heads for Pontiac blocks.
Generally, intakes for Pontiac V-8's fall into the following groups: 1955~1960 1961~1964 1965~1971 Newer than 1971 - don't know. Some intakes, with machining, may fit into a different group than above. This link may help: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Pontiacmultiplemanifolds.htm Jon.
I love Pontiacs... Here is a very long and very informative thread... Happy reading. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/tech-pontiac-engines.224124/
