First off carb is too small sell it and get a 670 minimum ,A stock cam or an rv towing cam is the key , You are probably sitting around 10 and a half to one So that means 94 ultra ,And these motors are gas pigs .I have one Its a stock 400 with a 670 and is about 335 horsepower....
What? The 2802 lacks torque in a 455? Sounds like something else is wrong. I run this profile in a non ported #16 head 400 with stock valves and stock short block and have no problem frying tires and I mean fryung tires. It gets up and goes with a 1.6 0-60 ft time at the track. 0-60 mph in 3.8 second and with a poor nitrous shot, 3.2 seconds 0-60 mph. I also do the 1/4 in 12.5 seconds on pump gas. 11.75 on nitrous. Engine is not fine tuned and has been going strong since 1991. Here are a few videos. Watch the fist video with sound up. Also at 20 mph, if I floor it, the rear Mickey Thompson Drag radial tires fry . Fun car on the street. Also remember its a great street driven car. I love the 2802 Cam and with the 455, it should perform even better!!!!
Hi all, Joe Hand here, youngest son of Jim Hand. Sounds like a lot of good advice given here. Has anything been done yet? If this was mine, I would keep the 6X heads and have them milled about .060", its cheap horsepower per dollar spent. No need for a valve job if they look OK, just lap the valveseats and go. Buy some new stock replacement valve springs, nothing fancy. Install the Summit 2801 cam and lifter set ($100), and order all your parts from them at once and the shipping comes out pretty cheap compared to local taxs. Keep the ****py intake till you found a stock one or a Eldelbrock RPM intake, not the Performer, its to big for engine. Then throw the Holley away and hunt for a mid 80's non electronic Q-jet. The 6X are the best heads out there for stock performance. You won't notice any more performace from other heads with the bigger valves out on the street. You can always add the bigger exhaust valves to your heads whe you get the money. If you are worried about weight of a stock intake, cut it up, cut everything away except the runners. We were doing this 25 years ago! You really won't find a better intake then a stock Q-jet intake, even the '73 EGR install intakes flow a ton of air. The 068 and replacement cams are the best all around cam made for the Pontiac if you want it to run. If you want a rough idle and no torque put something else in. The Ram Air 4 is a killer cam in the 455 or high compression 400. 4.11 gears and 4 speed were the only way you could get one in the 400's. This is the same cam the old Superduty 421's ran at Nascar. E-mail my dad, he has some pretty interesting information on the hydralic roller cams and why you don't want one, not only are they a lot of money $1000 or more by the time you get it running, but they don't make as much power as the same hydralic will! He has some dyno sheets from one of the top cam manufactorers. I ran nitrous for years on stock parts, broke a few pistons rings and cast pistons, but nothing else. In 1983 I was running a 4200 lb '77 Cam Am, stock 455, 096 heads (no porting), factory 068 cam, 3.42 gear, stock intake, cast iron headers, full 2 1/2" exhaust, 100 hp nitrous, q-jet, it ran 13.40's with out the gas and 12.40's with it. I drove the car everywhere. Joe
The 041 camshaft came 1968 used in RAII 4 speeds with the manitory ratio 4.33:1. For 1969-70 RAIV engines the 041 cam was named the RAIV cam.
