I've got what I am sure is a Pontiac 400 that I got out of a early 70's Grand Prix. My problem is when I looked at the code stamped on the block it doesn't match anything I've found. The code is 0010922 with a YC under it. It also has the 400 cast in the side of the block. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
YC was used for a lot of engines with automatic transmissions. You need to check the date code to be sure of the manufacture date. The date code will be at the rear of the block, right up by the distributor hole. The number you posted is the serial number of the car it came from, the letter code is what you look up along with the date code. What is the code on the heads? It will be a two digit code on the center exhaust ports, 48, 12, 13, 64, etc..... Joe
Joe H. gives you good info. Here is a chart of Pontiac engine codes: http://www.teufert.net/pontiac/engcodes.htm NOW, The 0010922 is simply an 'engine unit number'; i.e. an internal tracking number for warranty and inventory purposes. Nothing to do with what the engine is or the VIN # of the car. The partial VIN should be stamped down lower, close to the timing chain cover.
