I ‘m trying to convert my 56 Pontiac to power steering. I did a search and found several threads about using a 605 steering box. Everything I read states that some modification to the frame is necessary to make this work. There is no direct replacement, unless it is a 56 power steering unit. On e… there is a 605 box for sale that states “It bolts in the same location using the existing mounting holes. No frame modifications are required.” My question is 1) has anybody used this unit that is a “direct” bolt in? And 2) does anyone known what application would be a direct bolt in?
    Thanks

i bought a "kit"[different car] that wasn't worth a ****. ill fitting, he kept sending wrong parts. by the time i modified it to fit i could have made it myself. the final missing piece he said he could have his shop make. my answer was not if it is the shop that made the rest of it.

There is a copy of an old rodders journal on how to put a 605 box in at
    http://www.pontiacsafari.com

go under pontiac garage than listed under upgrades. Only one of the factory holes is reused I believe.

I've got that, That is why I'm asking if this guy on e.. has a direct bolt on. I would think if he does someone would have used his box instead. I think Buick and olds have the same issue, and he claims to have direct bolt on for them.I guess if I wanted it to be easy, I would build a chevy.

    Thanks good info.
Also I have read in thread about someone installing a quick ratio box in a 55 or 56 Buick,
He claims that because of limited positive caster, he has a hard time keeping it steady on the high way. Has anyone had this issue?

I know this is an old post but hoping for some help on this. I upgraded my 1955 Safari to the 605 steering box and the old pitman arm is slightly smaller than the splined shaft on the new gearbox. Everything I've read said the old pitman arm would work. The 605 box appears to have a 1.125" shaft and my '55 pitman arm seams to be closer to 1". Has anyone run into tuis and can someone guide me to the correct parts that I need to make this work? Thanks in advance for any help!

Can you use the 605 pitman arm?
