What intakes interchange for the Pontiac engines without switching heads? I'm specifically looking to put one on a 400. Will the 389's work? Any others? What years? Thanks, -Torr
65-up except 301 are all the same, 350, 389, 400, 428, 455. Most of the aftermarket intakes fit this bolt pattern. Pontiac motors are the same basic block from 1955 to 1981. 61-64 interchange with each other. 55-60 can be made to interchange though there's some minor changes between 55-58 and 59-60. I even have a spare iron '68 4bbl tucked away here, you can find them pretty cheap because it's not hard to find an aluminum one for $150 or less. Usually less.
[So it's the same for distributor and exhaust manifolds?.......I'm looking for a driver's side rear dump exhaust manifold..... this will make my search a lot easier.......
All distributors are the same from 55-79. Exhaust will all bolt up also. There are some exceptions, but only 301, and RA/SD stuff. Don't worry, nobody will accidentally sell you round port RAII headers. Most Pontiac exhaust tucks up nice and tight due to the head design. Check your junkyard. I have an exhaust manifold for you, but it's not worth the shipping cost.
Any '64-'77 A-body exhaust manifold should be rear exit. Around '72, Pontiac went to four bolt holes on them as opposed to the six they used up to that point, and if your heads have provisions for six bolts, try to find a six bolt manifold. They leak enough as it is, without eliminating hold down bolts. Also, at some point in the mid '70s, they went to a three bolt flange instead of a two bolt.
Thanks, is there an easy way to visually identify and stay away from the 301's in the junk yard? -Torr
301s came out in '77. They have a single plane, very flat looking intake. All other Pontiac intakes look high rise by comparison. Also, 301s had a small PF47 oil filter sticking straight out the side, as opposed to the larger PF24 filters that the other Pontiac engines used.
301's are shorter through the deck height, the intake is flatter and the center exhaust ports are siamesed.
