i'd check both the resistor and the coil. also the wiring for a bare spot shorting.

    Are you running a tach?
If so disconnect it and see if it stops blowing the fuse.

I've met several folks (after it happened to me too) with internal grounds in the tach that blow the ignition circuit.

Check out all components that run off the ignition circuit.
    Electric fuel pump?

    coil fuse?

never even heard of one, but I never had a '54 Buick either.

A poor connection, bad wire or bad ground, anything that causes resistance will cause spikes in voltage.

also check stuff like point gap, distributor shaft wear, breaker point pivot shaft wear,..all those cause resistance too.

use a voltmeter to check everything, I would start with the battery and generator.

i put in a new wiring harness and ran the balast resister because i have pertronics in the dist.

  6. im not familiar with the petronics, but do you use a ballast resistor with them? i've used MSD boxes with points and you don't use them then. what amp fuse are you using? painless wiring uses 10 amps

I do'nt think you need a ballast resistor with a pertronics unit.

  8. that's what i was just thinking. the ballast resistor is to save on the points, and you don't have them with the petronics
