I think I have a bad resistor. If I bypass the resistor will I burn out the points? It's a 12 volt CSB.

  3. You can bypass it long enough to light it off and see if the resister is the problem.

Or you could take an OHM meter and see if current is passing through it or a volt meter and see what voltage you have on the coil end of if. or you could pull the resister and look at the back side of it. If it is open on the back side like a lof of them are you can see if the wire is burnt in two or broken.

But back to your original question yes you can bypass the resister long enough to start it and see if it is the resistor is causing the problem. The points will burn after awhile but it isn't instant.

    Thanks for the answer guys.
I took the resistor off and it looked fine. We ran a wire across the 2 terminals and it didn't start. Checked the connection at the battery and the ground to the block.
It has started all evening as we cruised around so I think the problem is solved for now.
I still carry a screw driver to lay across the starter solenoid, just in case.
    Thanks again.
