I like it. It is a bit overdone, but the workmanship looks great. I always like to get ideas from builds like this, and my dad has always been a porsche guy, so I have been around them my whole life. I guess because of that I like to see what the Euro side of the car world is doing as well.
Indeed...Emory's shop/family does THE best hot rod 356's I have ever seen, very tasteful and subtle, much diferent that that silver thing which is way over the top and rather silly looking. My old '57 race car, wish I had kept it and turned it into an outlaw for the street...oh well.
I found out not too long ago my uncle painted the 'Silver Bullet' I would ask him some questions but they all seem to be answered in the article.
I guess this would be an ok place to post these photos. These came from a found Kodak slide "donut" from a goodwill store. There were other photos from Fort Hood or maybe Waco, Tx.. Obviously a service man that did a stint in Germany in the mid '50's. Some very cool Porsches here. Dan
Jeem, When I started at Art Center in '59, some student there had a really early, flat white split 356 -- the kind with the bumpers below the body instead of wrapping around. If you walked around this car you couldn't go more than a foot without passing a dent you hadn't seen before. "Roached" would be too kind a word for this POS. I remember thinking, I would never do that to a car myself, but I'd love to have it just for a beater. This was definitely the car you wanted!
It started life as an V screen 356 .Sold to Jeff.He cut it up in 24 hrs & gave the rest back to Greg.A bloke who has been collecting 356's for 40 years & a very good friend of Jeff's.Jeff Dutton is a panel beater/mechanic.I didnt get the rest of the story from Greg yet.But I'll ask him next week .The car did a lot of racing before it was sold.
Porsches have been my favorite since I was a wee lad ,but I am crazy over these outlaw 356s. It is what Dr Ferdinand Porsche would have done in his spare time. I built a kit 356 speedster a few years ago and had a blast with it but always wanted a coupe to play with. aah maybe someday.
Don't know a bunch about Porsche's,but I haave fond memories of watching them rip around the Sebring airport in the 70's and 80's.The wife got a couple pics of this one at last months Roar and Soar show.
not a 356 obviously. i built this speedster from a '73 targa about 10 years ago. 3 liter turbo engine with SC cams and a K27 turbo. scary fast. sold it and recently traded it back not much worse for wear.
very good thread, i wouldn't compare them a bit to volkswagons, i know the links, but they were built to go as fast as possible in a lightweight car, and of course James Dean drove one and sadly died in one, they are insanely fast. what other car company had a car with the nickname widowmaker?
