I have an AV8 Sport Coupe with a 1934 rear end with welded-on spring perches so needed a narrow spring. I ended up getting a local spring shop to make me a custom main leaf to save on cost. Like you I had the spring in and out many times to get the desired ride height. I also tried a Model T spring but it didn't work well.

Probably no help to your situation; but a 1001 spring with the top two leaves removed on a full fender A with a SBC ends up with the shackles at almost exactly 45 degrees.

If it doesn't come out low enough; a 1001L spring will get you another inch.

They make (heard the quit) the narrow rear springs as there is not enough room between the backing plates of narrower late model axles to put the hangers at stock width to use a stock width spring.

Yep, when I read that I raised an eyebrow as well.

Are you planning on having him drop your axle?

    Because, well just read this......

Well that's not too encouraging. Seems he's been doing this quite a long time. You would think if this is a common problem there would be more about it?
I mean if someone is doing sh*t work consistently how do they stay in business?
[I'm probably attempting to re***ure myself..]

Yeah, every now and then even an old blind sow finds an acorn.

A tie rod like that is really not that hard to make, but most shops probably shy away from doing them due to liability concerns.

Outside of the fact that I've now had two axles bent by him (both of which have camber issues) what really pissed me off was when I sent him a pristine axle and he shipped back that pitted, twisted, bent piece of garbage.

As far as I'm concerned, there are better choices for axle work.
