    Hey Hambers.

Got a 53 Customline. Positive cable goes to ground by the p***enger side thermostat, negative goes to the solenoid. Guy has the grounded positive cable hooked to the negative battery terminal. Negative to positive.

    They were built that way.

So the red grounded positive goes to negative on the battery?

The positive cable on the battery should go to ground and the ground cable on the battery should go to the solenoid. I don't remember about the colors, it's been over 50 years since I had a positive ground car.

This is great. Thus car is set up the same, but the previous owner has the grounded positive to the negative terminal. The black negative wire on the positive battery terminal. Guess I can just switch it back. Do it have to repolarize the generator?

What you are saying is kind of confusing. How about posting a picture of your battery wiring????

Ignore the colors. ***uming the car is still original, the negative terminal of the battery connects to the solenoid. The positive terminal of the battery goes to ground. It wasn't until 1956 that Ford switched to the negative ground system still used today.
