Got a stupid question guys, Does my 46 plymouth have pos grounds from the factory? I just got this car and got her started yesterday, which is pretty kickass!!sounds cool!! Now I just used an old 12v battery outta a jap car, and it was hooked up standard (ie ground to engine block) and she started right up, quickly i might add. So now ive been reading that she should have pos grnd? Its been my experience (with my bsa) that if you hook up backwards, you will let all the smoke outta the wires. Plus, wouldnt switching polarity make the starter go backwards?? Anyone in the know???
Yes, it is positive ground. The starter spins the same way pos or neg ground, so the car will start. There is a possibility of changing the polarity of the generator if you reverse the leads. You can repolarize it - I don't remember the procedure offhand but it involves correctly installing a 6 volt battery (positive ground) and then jumping the hot (negative) terminal to the field of the generator. Someone help me refresh my memory on this one. The best battery for this car is a 6 volt Optima. It can sit flat in the battery tray, improving the view under the hood.
