If you have his home phone number, find out if the area code is Chicago poper or one of the suburbs. The prefix can usually lead you to the location where it's normally used. Just ask information or sometimes you can find it on a quick search on the net. Then call any branch of the county library, where that prefix is located (probably Cook County), and ask the librarian for a Bressure's (bresh-ers) check (phone number crossref to address).
It's pretty common and has worked for me in the past before Al Gore invented the internet (hehe).

    Good luck brother!

I have a stupid question. Did you try puting his phone number into Google to see what address comes back? Sometimes that will work. Also, ZABA search will work if you have a phone number and a full name and city.

Good luck man! Hope it works out for you! Keep in touch with Chad and Joe. Maybe they can help you out...

    Keep us posted!

I got ****ty with him on the phone told him i have friends close to were he is that can take care of this . he hung the phone up. 3 days later i e-mailed him. told him i was filling out a report to the FBI FRUAD DIV. AND YOU WILL BE CONTACTED BY THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE. Give it a try it worked fo me.

It would be very interesting what would happen if you did a "charge back" on the credit card. Credit Card processing is almost full proof in this regard. This is why you should always use a credit card through paypal when buying stuff. Basically what this means is that you call your card company and contest the charge, they go back upstream and freeze the money against the bank the money was transferred to, and it then everybody can all go to arbitration if they don't want to give back the money.

I always use a credit card thru paypal. The credit card companies(for good or bad) almost always get you a refund with a good reason.

  12. well i guess we're giving up. been calling everyday, almost every hour, from different phones, but having no luck. i'd strongly advise against doing business with Van Lain, 2618 W. 51st street, Chicago, Illinois 60632 (773) 778-8550

Tell me about it! That's about 10 minutes from my house... and we're in a worse neighborhood. :)

Ricky, I'll drive by there after work tonight and see if there's even a business there.

Have you contacted the USPS Postal Inspection Service for that area? The local States Attorney? The State Division of Consumer Protection? The computer can be a useful tool for this. Don't give up, keep trying these options and maybe you'll get lucky or at least cause the ***hole some grief.

now im not advocating strong arm tactics here or jack booted threats..thats really not a great idea..you dont need that kind of attention..besides it will make you look like the jerk..
Take a day off and go for a drive and walk into the guys shop, ask for him by name..than ask nicely why he is screwing you..and that since you see that he cant find the mailbox, you have decided to come and get what he owes you with out having to wait for it to be shipped to you.

oh sorry..i didnt realize you were that far away from him..thats probably why he feels secure with ****ing with you..he thinks you will never come to his neighborhood to collect..maybe if its worth it to you to make him "understand" that distance isnt the issue here, he might change his mind..or make some friends in his neighborhood.

That address is also Midwest Engine Service AKA Engine Czars

The owner is Lionel Vega. Maybe he can help... might also try asking for Tony. I don't know if that will help... but it might.

Maybe use this number instead... 773-778-6400 That is the shop number I have.

This Van Lain isn't just a sub contractor working from that address is he? ...seems like a lot of people running "businesses" from one locale.

Sounds like you have some great contacts now! Too bad they're all at the same phone number! I'll drive by and see if the shop is still there tonight.

Engine Czars? Didn't they used to be on Irving Park or Belmont?

Good! I just came from there. It's a real rundown looking place with piles of motors outside in the snow, but there are parts on the shelf. The sign said they were open 8:30 to 5 week days. I checked with the parts store across teh street and they said that they were definitely still in business.

    Good luck!

if this doesnt work for ya, let me know and I can make a call. I can't guarantee success... but if I can't maybe my boss will be willing to make a call. He knows (and is well respected) by everyone.

    Good luck!
