I love my traditional hotrods and working on them but theres nothing like a blown alcohol funny car, this is us: Here's the chassis in the shop without the body: With the body on: We run a 6.13 1/4mile & 3.80 1/8th mile at 200+mph, just under 3,000hp It'll put a smile on your face, for sure. I do the mechanics, tuning (along with the driver) and fabrication. Getting one of these ready to make a pass is about the hardest work I've ever done, no exaggeration.
I'm too old and poor to even dream of nitro, even in a cackle car. This would be the craziest I'd even dream. Had a chance to try out for an alky crew position. It would have meant an hour each way every night. Ended up not trying. Still love 'em. If it's acceptable, talk us through the process from clearing out the trailer after a weekend to towing out to the next race. The part nobody sees.
OJ ... I really wonder how many other guys or gals are involved with racing a funny car, altered or dragster here on the HAMB ? Are you primarily doing Match Races?
We run wherever we can, we'd love to do the FunnyCar Chaos events but they're all too far away (except for one of them). We hope they start an East Coast Chaos with a season ending East vs West Coast thing. There's quite a few hambrs that can talk from experience.
#4 is a Race Saver class started by French Grimes and the #1 car is a WOW 410 car. I think #1 is one of the best looking cars we owned. Black & Chrome.
Thanks for posting, that was a great idea, I changed the title and lets get Hambr's race cars posted up here!
I like trail-braking into corners [as well as acceleration] My present car is a genuine FR500C SCCA Grand-Am series race car. [with SCCA history] It is 400 lbs heavier, and 190 hp less than my old Corvette Racer but actually does faster lap times. [probably because the 315/40 x 18 tyres all round "stick like shit to a blanket"] Fun car, and a lot cheaper than counselling. .
1970 SG Nova , N/A 355 , glide , 2247 lbs 6.20 1/8@ 107 Some of the best Best Father / Son times are at Race tracks. This little 13.8 comp 355 has been in the dirt mod 6 seasons & never been apart intill reincarnated into our Nova. Last winter it got a solid roller cam & good set heads. It’s pistons are my avitar , lol My 30 year addiction was this , my last open wheel ….. o what fun it is , I didn’t want son ate up with it as me so we built the drag car it’s awesome but this , oneself would have to try to see. I’ve been blessed to learn to work hard & this was my relaxation that was quite the opposite!
26 T Coupe. Everything built in home garage/shop except the body. 514" Cadillac, TH400, 9" Ford, ran 9.50's at 139 foot braking.
There ain't nothin like the sound of a roots blown engine when you first light it off, it just gets into your blood and has to be one of the most addictive things known to man. Sweet ride that.
I do not have much to do with this car now, but in the past I did. It was the experience of a life time.
I’ve posted the 40 here is a Dirt track car my dad built and his other buddy Ron was the engine builder and Jim drove. Dad found his original frame and I restored it. Though a 1/2 mile dirt car it won the Minnesota State Fair paved oval two year in a row. Also recreated a few pics, and ironically the guy who lettered the car now owns the house and garage where the car was originally built.
1976, 1975, 1974, 1974, 1978 and 1996. Not so prolific with the camera back then... All dirt, until 96 and got a road race/autocross Mini finished. NY dirt tracks from Michigan asphalt... There were a couple fugly cars before the modifieds, a 55 Ford and a 57 Chevy, and I helped some other guys both sportsman and modified. Screwed up once and almost got a friend dead, 72-73. Tommy Gage and the 05 coupe. Always remember to make sure that the motor mount bolts are tightened properly. Stuck throttle can destroy a driver and car...
My old 210 was a dedicated race car since 1965. It won the Super Chevy Shootout at Orange County Raceway in '81 and '82 with a 409/425. When I had it there was a 355, T400, narrowed Currie 9" with 3.89 gears. I bracket raced at Sears Point, ran 12:80's. One night someone called kinda late from southern and wanted to buy it. I told him no, not for sale. He owned it with the 409 and had been searching for a couple decades. A couple days previous while cleaning out some drawers in the garage he came across an old registration and had a sheriff buddy run the vin and found me. He made a ridiculous low ball offer, I hung the phone up. For the next week and a half he called everyday with a better offer. Finally I said shit, for that you can have it. Next day he was at my house with a trailer. I went and bought another midyear vette.
