Hi Guys, I posted this on the Mercury forum but there has been very little action there of late so I thought I would try this board as well. You guys have helped me on more than a few oc***ions with my Merc. I have a 53 Merc 2dr HT and have just redone all the brake lines wheel cylinders, springs, shoes and converted all four sides to self adjusting brakes. I now want to install a dual master cylinder with a double diaphram power booster and was wondering if anyone here has done this using one of the ebay units from Irish Dave? The ebay units have a 7" double diaphragm booster and corvette style dual master cylinder? Does the 7" double diaphragm booster have enough power for stopping our merc's with four wheel drum brakes, or would you recomend I put an 8" double diaphragm booster with the corvette style dual master cylinder on it ? Thanks
I think one of the guys here used one of the two boosters that your interested in but wasn't happy with it, I think he switched to a Jeep Cherokee booster.
The early boosters that got a bad rap were a single diaphragm unit,I do not think Irish Dave offers those anymore. His cell is (575) 544-4729 or try (575) 544-4729 He was here at a Phoenix swap meet and the units all appear to use the Corvette dual master.Best way is to call and ask Him straight out for recommendations. In some cases you will be adding a proportional valve to the system.
it was me that used a ebay kit and couldnt stop my car . it was worse then manual brake. and i did switch to a little jeep cherokee setup but it has disk on the front. you would need a diff prop valve. the booster i ordered was a 7 inch single diaphram unit with the corvette master. still got it in the floor if any wants to buy it, lol.
Thought I would throw this into the mix since many of us have done the dual master swap using the 67-68 Mustang master cylinder on drum brake cars.Autozone has this: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...mIdentifier=740969_132308_0_2877,44369,136995 This is a power brake and booster combo for the drum brake Mustangs. This is a dual diaphragm unit and if I remember correctly does not require a proportioning valve.
hey jeff my buddy just tried to buy one and Advanced auto, auto zone, and napa all said it was no longer available. i checked advanced auto's website and it said "not available" but maybe they were just backordered.
Another idea for a booster is the '67 Ford Galaxie booster, the bolt pattern is correct for the firewall and its not very big overall. I have 2 or 3 on the shelf but I have yet to try one.
Here is the one Autozone is out of: http://www.partsgeek.com/gxt4t2q-mercury-cougar-brake-booster.html
Here is one for a 67 Galaxie from same supplier . These are all less than $95 too . Jim http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1967/ford/galaxie/brake/brake_booster.html
You will need the factory brackets for the back side of the Galaxie booster, they raise the actual booster up and away from the firewall.
