Torque and horsepower estimate on this engine? 1958 290hp long block, bored to 4" (301 cubic inch displacement) Duntov mechanical lifter camshaft Offenhauser 3x2 intake, Oldsmobile J-2 carburetors (Rochester 2GC) with progressive linkage Thanks!
Heads, crank weight, compression all effect the numbers. We are talking bored 283 right? If so GM rated the same basic motor (different cam) with a single 4, 11.0:1 compression... @ 290 hp 290 torque in '69. Built right the 301 was a screamer (rever). Realistly probably around 350- 375 hp at the flywheel. They weren't a torque monster (short stroke). In a light vehicle it should be scary fast. At least thats the way I remember 'em.

[/ QUOTE ] A real 58 290HP lock is worth a lot more $$$ than a garden variety 62 327 ( 4" bore block). The compression will need to lower than the old days to compensate for the lower octane gas. Mine (292 ...283 plus .060) is 10/1 or so and sparks if you put much timing to it. 300 or so Horsepower.......and low torque......under 3000 rpms.... for your combo.....just a guess..... If you are in the 'planning' stage........I suggest finding a better, yet less valuable block.....62 - 67 327. Their are already 4" bore and are way stronger at 4 inches than a overbored 283.
It's an imaginary engine build for a display engine for the new workshop. It's actually a '68 327 block with no crank and cracked waterjackets.
Cheese, If you're into the Duntov solid camshaft, you should check out the Isky Z-25 solid camshaft or the Z-27 & Z-30 if you really want to get crazy. http://www.iskycams.com
