Well, he did say he hopes there is another show in three years! Pic of John's Model A coupe at Deuce Days 2016.
Pile of sheet metal back from the blaster, could not be happier with the results after taking 90 of surface covering off. Hope this old fart remembers where all the panels go back. Excited about the next phase, moving on.
Your project is looking good! Make sure we get to see that Yblock running with the 4-71 on it. Who painted/lettered and striped the Merc valve covers? They look great
Lettering by none other than the great Craig Judd from Chowchilla, CA. In our regard the finest fine-line pin-striper on the west coast. Mitch Kim and Craig are on the same level. Craig has been doing our work for a number of years and recently lost his wife of almost 50 years. I just spoke with him this week and told him to get out and do what he does best, stripe something and make it beautiful. He is REALLY talented.
I am terrible about keeping up with progress, thought it was time to update somewhat. In keeping with trying to source as much as I can from the H.A.M.B., I bought a 34 Buick dashboard from Radicalratrod. It was very much as represented and almost bolts into a 29 Ford cowl. I couldn't be happier with the look. Earlier I as having a hard time where to put the 1895 Quarter and had fairly well decided it would go in the gear shift knob until the dash arrived. It had a clock delete plate with domed glass in the glovebox door. I engine-turned a couple of new panels for the dash and glovebox inserts and mounted the quarter behind the domed glass, so it has found it's home. Received the 471 back from Dyer's Blowers and are those people nice to do business with! Efficient from start to finish. Still hoping to not have a hole in my hood but will not know that for sure until I get the Whippet grill mounted. It should be back from West Coast Metal Shaping soon. I will try to be better about updates.
USMercUte, If it is not to personal, could you give me a ball-park figure of what they charge to go through a 4-71 blower? I have one that I was thinking of trying to do my self, but maybe it would be wiser and quicker to send it out. any advise, and info would be appreciated.---Jim
Alaska Jim, Dyer's website has full pricing and my particular blower required some additional machine work which they included in their over price/quote. The unit is quoted upon arrival, no surprises with this company. Have a look at their website, www.dyersblowers.com. Price list is there. Again, great company to deal with. If this is for your Y-block I have suggestions from Y-Bloke for pulley tooth count, belt size and drive off-set if you need it.
Thanks for the information, my particular application would be for my flathead, although my brother is planning on using a 4-71 on a y-block, but it is a little later in the future, he has a roadster pick-up to finish first. He does already have a y-bloke manifold though. By the way the quarter looks great.
I'm pretty sure that as cool as they might appear to be with those little Y block V8 cut-outs that they are going to prove to be very poor performers once you get the engine running. I doubt very much that they will flow enough air for the engine to breathe properly .
I agree that they are probably going to be to restrictive, and will probably replace the filter element with a standard one that is a little taller. The real problem I will have is that I have the "D" shaped aid cleaners for my 2x4 y-block, and I will have to modify/manufacture a filter to fit the "D" shape housings. I think that Kahuna, over on the ford barn told me that is what he has done.
Better at building hot rods than at the f***ing computer. Here is the other picture I wanted to post.
Hi again guys. Sorry about the lack of posts but after a potentially life ending health experience I am now again back on the project. I'm keeping with my attempt to use as many of the H.A.M.B. suppliers as possible on this project, the latest are: Side steer conversion from Throwback Hot Rod Designs. VERY nice parts. (Sorry Pete Eastwood, I couldn't help myself). VERY HAPPY Drive Shaft headers from Gear Drive Speed & Custom. Beautiful fit and workmanship. And Prompt! VERY HAPPY Brassworks radiator custom built to my '28 Whippet shell. A work of art! VERY HAPPY I will try to keep up on the progress in the future.
Nice sheet metal! Any detail on the lower cowl fit and side sub rails to the curved top of the Squeek Deuce frame? Lovely project. Dreamy Y-block power, with a wind machine to boot! *I have one of those 4 spoke wheels, the two seams should be set at 10:00 and 2:00. That way, you know where the front wheels are in a deft slide...(old Midget/Sprint car trick) Also, your spokes will be in an 'Z' straight ahead...your gauges will be visible...
Mike in Atwater, The deal is on the lower cowl fit is that it is basically channeled 5/8 of an inch from the face of the firewall, tapering back roughly 12". I was able to utilize all 4 forward bolt holes in the Kiwi Konnection frame. Cowl area is very solid. Like the steering wheel idea and didn't realize it was an early circle track trick. Thanks for the nice comments, John
Hi John, Your ride is coming along nicely, thanks for the plug on my cowl steering kit it look awesome on your cowl!
Wow Guys, time passes quickly as I get older, but some updates. Because I don't get as much done in a day as I used to I farmed the hood out to Rootlieb, Inc. out of Turlock, CA. Very happy with the results. I added a couple of panels just rear of the radiator to help blend the grill shell in. A few louvers with my curved die to get the air out. My last two cars have had Auto Lamp C-430headlights. These are the same headlight used on the Niekamp roadster that won the 1st A.M.B.R. I have to admit I have become obsessed about finding another set for this project. I have searched everywhere I could think to look. After a long weekend away from the H.A.M.B., I sat down to have a look at the parts for sale and there on page 4 I see a pair advertised. Figuring I was too late and they would be gone by then, I none the less replied and YES, they were still available. Jersey Suede on the H.A.M.B., who is actually Lance Sorchik, the hot rod artist, agreed to sell them to me. (check out his artwork at www.lancesorchik.com) I received them yesterday on time, well packaged and most importantly as represented. Now all the pieces of the puzzle are in hand so I best get off my butt and finish this thing. Once again, the power of the H.A.M.B. amazes me and I keep making new friends along the way as well. How good is that? John
It's so nice to not only watch a killer car come together but to read of the positive ppl (from here and from companies) you've dealt with. Great car. Now get it done!
Thanks flatheadpete, Glad you are enjoying our build, we are on it and will get it done! Northwest Deuce Days 2019 in Victoria here we come!!!
What a week, the body is actually off the chassis, upside down for bottom side welding and details prior to paint. Bit of a milestone and it feels good to SEE progress, so many days you work all day long and can't see what your did. The best part of the week was the telephone call from Advanced Plating telling me that my Whippit radiator cap was not actually in the fire area and has survived! I am really relieved as I don't where I would ever of found another. I can't say enough about Advanced Plating and I really feel bad for them with what they are going through right now. I live 60 miles from Sherm's but choose to use Advanced Plating (2300 miles away) but that is another long story
Nice progress! Love the coin story and placement of it. A car club member here had a similar story with a silver dollar, it went on the shifter. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
