I’m running a 31 model A with original frame, front axle and spring and a sbc engine . It’s getting harder for me to turn when trying to maneuver into or out of a parking spot . In considering converting to power steering . Have any of you done this and what box did you use ?

Speedway and summit have a power box that fits where a Vega box goes. I’m thinking about trying one on my ‘32

Get skinner tires, 85 series, 4-1/5” to 5” rims and run them at 35 psi…. You would be surprised the difference. Lastly a 17” steering wheel if you don’t have one now.

I’m not going to change wheel size and I’m already running a 15” steering wheel if I run anything larger I won’t fit in the car. Power steering help only please.

Is it legal to talk about power steering on this site? I've been censored for doing it a couple times.

Personally I don't see why you were censored. I posted about electric power brakes and I don't think it made 30 seconds, maybe I just couldn't find it later. To me if it will aid in the operation of the vehicle why not "allow" it.

To keep it side steer, hunt down a Toyota Land-Cruiser [or straight axle Hi-Lux 4 x 4] steering box / pitman /pump /lines.

Here is a non-power steer box to show you the layout

    Here is a P/Steer box

    Don’t poke the bear!!!!!

Gently point the discussion to the off topic forum, don’t try to start a war on the original board.

OK, for people that don't seem to know the rules here, there is nothing wrong with hydraulic power steering as it was offered on cars in 1965 and before. The Hamb is a traditional hot rod forum that focuses on 1965 and older build styles on 65 and older cars. There is a new off topic forum where it is perfectly fine to discuss elect power steering and Pinto independent front suspensions and rack and pinion steering....

CPP offers power steering kits for late 50's Chevy and Ford pickups that fit original steering side steer set ups. Bolts to the inside of the frame rail. Don't know if it will work on your car but it's an option comparable to the Toyotas previously mentioned. Shop around if interested in this route as multiple vendors handle these.

If effort is getting increasingly harder with that Corvair box I'd say that the main issue is that the little designed for Well under 1000 lbs on the front tires. Skinny little 13 inch front tires at that. The bearings in that box are probably getting in pretty bad shape.

Even a non power land cruiser box would be a big improvement or an F-1 box or F100 box that are a lot better Model A conversion box than Corvair that shoudn't be put on anything heavier than a T bucket. Screenshot (289).png

I read that as he was finding it harder to steer because of his own physicality, not because it's actually getting more difficult.

@Moriarity why don't we scoot this thread over to the OT forum for him? I think it is a great question. As we age, we may not be able to drive manual steering cars but still want (and have a rite) to drive hot rods. I have a great many friends who have lost the use of both arms, PS and automatics are the only way they get to play. I'll share what I did to my PU that allows her to drive it effortlessly after the thread is in the proper location.

Why don't you start a thread over on the off topic section covering "Adding power steering where it wasn't."?

Then if someone has options for adding PS on traditional cars they can post here, and if someone might be looking for a modern way to add power steering to a vehicle that didn't have it before, they can look into the way you did it there.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a picture of the OP’s car. It could be a scrub radius isue if he has reversed wheels and wide tires on the front. Might not even need power steering….
