Ive got a 62 merc monterey, was reversing out last night heard a pop. Now i have no power steering turning left but do turning right. Anyone have a guess where I should start?
Sounds like the spool in the control valve is not moving equal distances when steering is turned from side to side. First and easiest thing to do is make sure the spool is centered. To do this remove the control valve end cap (two slotted screws). Once removed you will see a 5/16 self locking nut. Tighten this nut up, and then back off 90 degrees (1/4 turn). Replace end cap before testing to see if it works. If it does you should replace the lock nut with a new one. If not then have a buddy rock the steering wheel while you observe the movement of the ball stud where the drag link connects to the pitman arm. If all is well it should slide about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in either direction before the drag link starts to move. This slide action moves the control valve spool to direct fluid pressure to or from the ram. If it does not move then you will have to remove the control valve assembly to determine the cause of failure.
I'd have to believe that Dominick is correct and that the valve isn't moving fluid to that side to aid in turning. I only rebuilt on of those in my life and spent about four times as long adjusting it on the car as I did rebuilding it. They work great when they work but you have to have the patience of Job and and extreme amount of finesse to get one redone and right the first time without trouble. Way more of both than I have at any rate.
