I am getting a new power steering box for 56 chevy front clip and wondered what is best to get .They offer a Variable Ratio ,12.7:1 Ratio and 14:1 Ratio .
The 14:1 is very comfortable and about 3.5 turns lock to lock while the 12.7 is about 3 turns lock to lock still in the comfort zone..The variable ratio I have no experience with.. ..
The 12.7 ratio is typical of what is found on the Pontiac Trans Am and other performance cars. It is fairly responsive (quick), but not necessarily 'touchy'. The variable ratio aspect comes into play as the gear is turned further into it's travel. I agree with seb fontana that the 14.1 is a good ratio for normal driving. Ray
