Well I have run in to one of those life long questions . I have some money saved up so I can go on the power tour this year should I go or spend the money getting my childhood car back on road ? It's gonna cost around 1200 for me to go, on the other hand 1200 in my shoebox would finish it enough to drive. What would y'all do.
Sounds like one of life's dilemma's should I stay or should I go. Only one person can answer that question personally I like a good road trip but who wouldn't want to get another Hot Rod running. I know I'm no help but that is definitely a question only you can answer. Joe
I did the Power Tour in '06 and had a great time in my '57 Chevy. So my answer is if you don't have your car finished, what's the point? The tour might not start/finish close to your home anytime soon, but you will have your car to enjoy for many years to come.
I'd finish your car. Once you have it up and running, you'll be on a never ending road trip. You'll be able to take it next year.
You'd would really want to go on a "road tour" with 5000 other cars...??? Smaller is better...here's one of the last "power tours" my brother and I did... I'd say do the power tour if it's been on your mind, I'm sure it would be an experience to remember. The smaller personal power tour 40StudeDude took with his brother is pretty cool as well.
I'd finish the car, then do a tour (either the Power Tour or with just a friend or two) when you can afford it.
Years ago when those power tours were just a couple hundred or less cars rolling across the country to some far flung events I was all for going but now with 5000+ cars and it being a rolling circus I'd rather meet up with a smaller bunch of cars headed to an event that is a couple thousand miles away or just do it solo and at my own pace. It's hard to get a group that will cruise along at a group pace with stops that meet everyone's needs. Some guys think they have to run 20 over the limit all day long and set mileage distance records while other would rather cruise along at or just below the speed limit and stop for photo ops, comfortable meals and rest areas and gas stops.
That's a tough call For me if the money would get my car up and running like I would want then the car would get fixed. If not and had some good friends that are making the trip then I would be like you know.
Did the 97 event, long haul, Portland to L.A. to Mt. Clemens (Detroit), back home. Wow, you have to do it at least once in your life. Better do it before gas is back at $4.00 a gallon too. Nothing like it. Those first years had to have been like herding cats for the organizers. I can't imagine what a cluster F#$& it is to do now. Saw many of the movers and shakers we all have looked up to for years. Baskerville was on this "Chingo" too, RIP Gray. Oh yah, Saw Squirrel too, with his blown 55.
I want to do Power Tour someday, and really want to do it this year. Need to get some personal stuff out of the way first, so I can't yet commit to going though.
Finish the car, then tour! Jerry Dixey with streetrodder mag has tours every year! I have done several, and always a good time and many interesting stops!
Agree, FINISH CAR ! Then you can go everyday/weekend with your new ride. Only ran a small segment of a tour, big rolling car show. Guys That I know that ran full tours said it was a fun experience, and everyone should do it at least 1x. There are several tours besides the Hot Rod magazine tour and there's always next year.
