Help!! I'm having my first battle with a Powerflite push ****on transmission. I'm working on a 56 Plymouth Suburban with a 277 and the cast iron 2 speed trans. I believe the governor is the problem but I am struggling to remove the tail shaft.. The old service manual has a part number for a specialty tool that I can't locate. Any suggestions???

The snap on, snap ring pliers number to spread that snap ring is sr2a or cross it to craftsman or kd tool number or lisle# 44900. It would be possible to spread the snap ring without the tool but not easily.

I didn't see a snap ring location or see any mention of it in the shop manual.

Why are you removing the tail shaft? You should only have to remove the tail housing to get to the governor. To remove the housing first remove the speedometer gear ***embly. It should just unscrew. Then remove the 4 bolts that hold the housing in place. Fashion a makeshift housing puller to remove housing.

When you remove the trans mount under it there should be a metal cover with 2 screws. Remove the cover, its accesses the snap ring on the tail shafts bearing groove, spread the snap ring and the tail shaft housing should come off. As d2 said remove speedo gear (Mark position)case bolts and any park brake ect attached to tail housing. Before doing this,do you have throttle pressure adjustment & is that set correct?
