Powerglide Modulator Issue, HELP!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by chopsaw209, Jul 12, 2010.

  1. Hey guys, TRANSMISSION EXPERTS

I'm in a bind right now. 63 chevy Bel Air equipped with a powerglide and it's my only wheels right now since my gal got a good job and had no car so I have been loaning her my new Chevy truck :D A good excuse to buy another project that has been very faithful so far.

It was shifting hard coming down from hi to low so I bought a new vacuum modulator. Funny thing was this modulator had no adjustment. Maybe the guys at the local family parts store *****'d it I dunno? They claim it's the updated version.

So it fixed the rough shift into a smooth one but now when I go from stopped to moving it doesn't want to engage properly. There are NO gear grinding sounds, but more of a slipping sound.

I yanked that new modulator and put the old one back on since it would at least engage, but after I put the original (adjustable) modulator back on it still doesn't engage properly all of the sudden. What a damn mystery. Are there any base settings I need to know about with that adjustable modulator? A benchmark to start from? What direction do I turn the screw to get a specific reaction? Any and all help would be much appreciated. I only have a window of today to get this figured out since my work schedule is crammed until the end of the week.

    THANKS!!!!!
