Yup, the electronic version adds an E and the end, the 4l60E. That one does nothing without a controller.

To make matters more confusing, since they are all electronic now, GM dropped the E off of the end of the named of the new stuff.

The 200-4R did not continue into the electronic era.

For anyone looking for a 200-4R, California Performance Transmission, home of the legendary Art Carr, it where it's at.

The can build them from stock replacement, all the way to 1,000hp. The higher capacity ones lose the lock-up feature, in favor of a solid input shaft.

One other thing, the 4.3 has the same bolt pattern as a smallblock Chevy, but I think there is a little bit of difference in the inner components from a 4L60 used behind a V8. I believe it works fine, but the shift points may be a little different. Don't take that as gospel, but you might want to check before installing one. :)

From the 1960s-early 90s, GM was pretty good about making transmissions only as strong as they needed to be (or almost as strong!), so you'll usually find more or fewer clutch plates, different calibrations, etc for lower or higher hp applications.

4.3 in the roller cam TBI era were fairly potent little 6s. I would not be surprised if there was really any difference between a 88-92 4.3 700 and a 305 TBI variant.
    IIRC there's only a 10HP difference. 160 vs 170.
    So a later 88 4.3 700 is still a good core.

Still think it's a crap trans though.
