hi as i have to rebuild my 283sb, i also want to increase hp. its an original 283 with flattop pistons. what cam, inlet, carb an heads (in combination) are wise? it should be streetable, and i dont want to overbore. i still have an 296 hydro cam and some quadrajets. maybe useable? did someone already built up a 283 in that way and could give me some advise? greetings christian
ups, hrm, i didnt realize that i have to introduce myself. i am christian, sort of a car maniac, located in germany, building up old cars (and modifying them). if you want to see some of us oldschool garage. (non commercial just free time idiots.) greetings christian
Your 283 will run great with a basic rebuild and the addition of a slightly 'hotter' cam. You can select an aftermarket grind, or use a factory cam such as a 300 horsepower cam from a 350 engine...I've used that cam in a low buck rebuilt 283 and it worked GREAT in a 3000 pound car with an automatic trans and stock rearend gears. In general, any factory or aftermarket dual plane 4v intake manifold topped with either a Quadrajet, 600cfm Holley vacuum secondaries, or 600cfm Carter (Edelbrock) carb will give you plenty of punch on a streetable small block. Your choice may be affected by your budget...if so, just use a pre-smog Q-jet on a stock 4v intake and you should be good to go for about the price of a carb overhaul kit and some gaskets! I'd also recommend headers and a little faster advance rate on the distributor, along with good plug wires, a hotter coil and your chosen dress-up items. Now...let me suggest that you post an intro and provide us with a little more information about yourself and what you're working on. You'll find people here that can help you out, but we have to know what you're working with, and it's just common courtesy around here to introduce yourself and make a few friends! I mean, nobody can recommend a good combo for your engine if we don't know what you're gonna DO with it, right? Is it going into a T-bucket, a drag car, a 50s sled, 60s cruiser or a dump truck? Good luck with the rebuild, feel free to ask any questions or seek any advice you wish here...but do us the favor of an informal intro and fill out your profile a bit. It helps to know who we're talking to and where you're from. Odds are, there's another HAMBer living in your area that can give you a hand should you need it! Welcome!
[ QUOTE ] ... or a dump truck? Welcome! [/ QUOTE ] Welcome to the HAMB! I wonder what a Dump Truck is called in Germany?
I would use a factory Corvette fuelie cam, or a a L79 350 HP 327 cam. They're both lumpy and sound and perform great, without to much trailing throttle. The Vette cam is a solid lifter, and the L79 is Hyd. Holley or Carter/Edelbrock AFB 600 to 700 max CFM. 1.94, 2.02, or 2.05 valve heads for real punch. Edelbrock heads if you have the cash, but you'll need to raise the compression on the pistions, cause the Edelbrocks have open chamber large combustion chambers. If you can find a pre '67 327 block in good shape you can drop the 283 crank in it and build a 302. I had one what a hot little motor 7500 RPM revs all day long. KK
Welcome rb25 to the HAMB!...Your english writting is much better then my German writting or speaking. Noticed on your web site you and your friends like Mopars also. You should meet FlyingDutchmen one of the members on HAMB who lives in Holland and has the same type of cars you have in Germany. Their web site is "DeadEndCruisers.com" and by the way if you go to readers rides on this site you'll find a nice shot of a punched out 283 that get's my hot rod down the track in the 12's. But the advice above is all good, just figure out what you want out of your hot rod and the budget you have to work with. Good luck with your project and send in some future photo's of the finished or not finished car.
hi first, thank your all for your information. the 283 is built into my little muscle car, a ´68 opel commodore. see here: street legal v8 (it was a hard thing getting this rustbag legal) as of a lack of space, its not possible to use any other kind of headers than the original ones. ok, so i use my 296 hydro cam and my qjets; some one got me a few names for good useable inlets? its not that easy getting "exotic" stuff here in germany, more the usual stuff like edelbrock ect. (if you try to keep it payable) and i also wonder, is ist better to port my original heads and install big valves or spare the time and get some 327er heads? i could get a pair for about 250 bucks. do i loose compression with the 327ers? ah, i forgot to mention: the ******. the 283 drives a 5gear t5 and a shortened 10bolt chevy rear axle with a 2.9:1 ratio. greetings, christian
Cool site Christian, some intresting BMW's on there. What I want to know is how that new Mustang got over in Germany in this pic
must have been a soldier car; the event the photograph was taken was in munich, and quite a few american soldiers brought their cars to the 1/8 mile race.
ups, what i did forget: i dont have much space left on top of the block. so the inlet should be rather flat, not higher than the original one. and i would prefer an aluminium one. greetings christian
