Ok, I’m writing this as I’m suc***bing to the effects of Z-quil so bear with. Is it kosher to land the wire from a one wire alt to the Batt terminal on the ignition switch? I’m using an existing wire harness that was already in the car. I can’t figure out what the PO did with the original wire. He ran it into the fuse block but it’s such a tight bundle of wires I can’t figure out where he landed it. I have continuity at some fuses but not others. I have no cont. from the Alt stud to the battery pos. even with the key in the On or ACC position. Can’t see how the old system ever charged. Don’t recall there being a battery charge issue though (father in laws car). I know it should be run directly from the Alt to the battery but for the sake of starting the car for the first time I think there’s enough slack to reach the ign switch. Any issues with this at least short term? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
kind of depends on how big the wire is from the ignition switch, to the battery. And does it have a fuse or fusible link? my guess is the wire is kind of small, for that...
Nope.... While technically this will work, a heavy charge rate (like right after starting the car or while operating multiple loads) is very likely to overload the wire and possibly start a fire. Connect the alternator to wherever the 'main feed' for the electrical system is connected, probably at the starter solenoid.
Mine works just fine straight to the battery - 10 gauge wire with a fusible link. Ground wire is 10 gauge as well, because I’m kind of a nerd about grounds.
