Try- http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/ if you want to see the chips for a given year and model of car. Try- https://www.carpaintonline.com/paints.php if you have a PPG code and want to find out what it was used on
thanks rond. i am looking for a webpage showing me which colors are made so i can pick one, not match something already painted. i probably worded my inquiry a little obtuse!
Southpier-Did you even go through the prompts on the tcpglobal site? They have scans of actual vintage colorbook pages. It doesn't get any better than that. Isn't that what you are looking for?
i spent quite some time this afternoon searching around before i posted since i didn't want to bother anyone with something which i thought was a fairly straightforward. unless i'm missing something on that page, i'll be darned if i can find color chips. their search process presupposes there is a starting point such as a make/ model to start from. i want to select a frame color for a bicycle which i am having made. the company offers a half dozen stock colors, but will paint the frame any PPG color for an upcharge. give me a boot in the right direction if i'm missing something, will ya? thanks
Go to paint color library, from the menu on the left, then chose from 1930 to present or 1900-1930 from the boxes under the make year prompt. The different chip books appear in these windows.
Are you saying you want to pick a color by looking at chips on the computer? If you do don't expect the paint to be like what you pick. Picking paint from old chip books was hit and miss some, no way a everyday computer screen will give you an accurate color. No auto paint stores in your area that you can stop and look at their chips? Doesn't have to be PPG, just right down the number and what it is off of and they can cross reference it.
This is exactly why you need to let us know your intent AND what you are working on when you post. That way we can lead you in the right direction. I believe the best way for you to acomplish what you want is to do a little in-person homework. Don't wast your time trying to match some home brew custom color at this time. Find a car you like the color on. Any car. It HAS to be a stock color. Be it at a show or in a random parking lot. If it's at a show, ask the owner what the color code/name is. You may get a lot of info if you are cool about it. If it is at a random parking lot make reference of possibly what year and color the car is. Go to TCPGlobal site and use the prompts to see your color. Another way is to go to an auto paint store and bug them to see color books. Let 'em know why you are looking. Most of all stay cool and invite conversation. You are bound to find at least someone that will help you.
tha auto color library has some good examples if i dig around and i'm sure i can get something suitable. the original question precluded days on end search by making available, in the comfort of my own home, a vast choice of colors from which to choose. i don't think it's fair to bug the guys at other retail esatblishments for something i know i will not buy from them in the end. i expect to call a PPG 800 number sometime early this week and have them give me the most direct route to my goal. i'll post the result hoping the next guy can benefit from my research.
Southpier, Save yourself some time and do not call the PPG 800 number. They will be of no help to you. They are there, and work well if you already know what it is you want. If you are just looking to go through some chips then your local PPG jobber store is really the only way to go other then the aforementioned online TPCGlobal site. But as said, even that is a crap shoot because you are picking a chip based on what your computer monitor is showing you, which may not be correct to the actual color. And a good jobber will be willing to help you no matter what. Good luck....
