I painted my avatar car some years ago (around 10 years) with PPG tri coat candy apple red (Liquid Crystal Collection #908412-which is the translucent midcoat with the candy and metallics). I need some touch up and have a little but not enough. I contacted the local PPG stores and it has been discontinued and is no longer available. Any HAMBers that know a way to get the formula?

For whatever it is worth I found the formula so if anyone ever needs it I will have a copy of it.

  3. Good news. Can they still make it? Often discontinued formulas are due to one of the components not being made anymore.

I am in the process of finding someone to mix it. Two of the components are discontinued. I bought one discontinued component today and found a toner that has been discontinued in another state (but they are out of the component I bought today). Am going to visit the local store tomorrow to see what can be done-they do not have the toner I am pretty sure. If he does not have any toner and does not want to transfer the toner from the other out of state store then I have to travel out of state and bring them the component I have. The components are ridiculously expensive. Hopefully I can get a gallon mixed so I have some left over, as once the components are gone that will be the last of them. Crazy.

  5. At least you were able to find the components! It is almost always the case that a discontinued colour means something is no longer available in the formula and more often than not cannot be found and finding two discontinued components is almost a miracle (especially for a colour painted 10 years ago). Now you will need to find a really good painter that can touch up candy as it is an art. Good luck with it!!

I have been painting since 1964. Painting this stuff (especially touch up) is easy compared to the old time candy IMO-as long as they mix the color correctly-if not it can be a much more difficult task-fingers crossed. I had them mix a little before and they screwed it up and left one component out . Just don't paint much anymore since I got over exposed to it years ago and wanted to remain vertical. No way could I afford to have anyone else do it-you mention candy and the price goes goofy.
