got a 62 cadillac park avenue. would like to find some info on it, but doesnt seem like carfax or any other site will let you search with less then 17digits for a vin.

any suggestions how i can find some info out on the car as far as previous registration mileage and whatnot?

    any help is greatly appreciated.

  3. Call your MVD and request a title search. It will give you the complete title history of the car.

My search was met by blank stares from the registration people that store this stuff. It's in a box in the basement at the State BMV, was put there a long time ago and no one wants to look because it involves so many dead ends.
So I know a couple guys who owe me and they will look into it. Two days later the answer is no one wants to look and fewer care what they might find. The early stuff is not computerized in most states.
I think it can be done if one is polite, persistant and can find the gatekeeper.

Some states will provide that info for dealers. I used that method for a title search for an ot 60's car. I got some barely readable photo copies of info. and it did not go back to the origional owner.

I recently tried to track down one of my old cars to see if still registered, since it has become a race car. State of Iowa will not release owner information any more (privacy, anti-stalker or Homeland Security issues, I can't tell).

If I don't own it, I can't get the info. Very courteous staff, but no info available.

You might try a freedom of information request, but a lot of that is quashed since 9/11. Yeah, I know, what's the connection?!
