Some pictures from this Sunday's "Auto Speedway Centenial" in Lakeside, CA. Several pre-'30's race cars, ***orted other oldies and a few bikes. The two guys "roaring" around the corner in the blue T speedster are having way too much fun! Could you ask for a better product endor*****t?
Good question. I think Charlie Chops 1940 has "Whiskey Ridge Runners" on the hood of his RPU, but I didn't realize it was a Michigan history reference. -Dave
Wow, Harms Way, what a cool poster. Interesting that they use the Canadian/British spelling of Whiskey. Looking at Mapquest "between Maple Island and Bridgeton" is actually in Newaygo County today. Muskegon is still the nearest big city, though. Practically my neck of the woods. I wonder if anything remains. -Dave
Okay, I did a bit more digging. Seems Whiskey Ridge was in Grant. It operated from 1946 to 1976 (that doesn't explain the much earlier picture that started all this, though, maybe it reopened after WWII). The address listed on the website where I got my info is: 12099 Pike Ave Grant, MI 49327-8955 Here's a Mapquest aerial view. It appears the race track is immediately north and slightly west of the red star. You can fainly make out the old oval. It's only about twenty minutes from my apartment, I would love to go take a look. Too bad the weather is getting so ****py. -Dave
Harms Way, That is a 1911 Stoddard-Dayton, note the owners monogran on the radiator. It is INDY 500 builder/owner Carl Fisher, he used it as the pace car for the first 500, my guess is that the photo is on the track before the bricks were installed.
