I'm wanting to repaint the top of a door on a vehicle. Not posting pictures or talking about the vehicle as it's far from HAMB material and I'm sure I'll get good help here. I'm wanting to sand down the area and paint on top of the old paint. What sand paper do I need to get grit wise? I wanna be sure it's gonna be a good smooth finish when I'm done. The it'll be single stage paint going on a base clear. The paint is not metallic

Base clear? Metallic? Really can't go wrong with 500 wet.

Yes too many variables, base/clear? Enamel? Metallic? Are you wanting a hidden repair? Or just a paint close match?

Be aware that some of the newer paints are tri-coats, these require alot of work to hide repairs and very hard for a beginner. I know some pro's that have a hard time with them.
