Trust me , It will get more attention if you paint it! Rust has left town and hopefully spider webs are right behind it.

Thanks for the photo jalopyshots since I havn't got one of it yet that is about the look of it it might be just a little more rusty than that but not much. I know it will have to be painted but I think it is cool as it is now I guess i'll get some good photos. From all the comments I see a derusting and re paint is the way to go instead of keeping the rust. Boy did this question stir up something. I didn't know there was so much passion over rust.:D

Burger! You should re-re-read it again for the third time before you open your keyboard. Sound like he is asking our opinion to me!

SORRY for beating this horse, I just wanted to kick it one more time.

You should reread it yourself. He is asking for a method of how to achieve his desired effect, not if we think his idea is cool. Hence, not asking for an opinion.

But, we are jerks, and give our opinion anyway. What good is the internet if we can't do that?

    Mother of pearl!
Let me shed a little light on the "Patina" thing with a big tangent on the concept of "Genuine" and "Function". Some things that seems to have gotten lost in the wake of the "Rat Rod" thing. If one more person calls my truck a Rat Rod, I'm just going to start swinging.
Some of us have wet-dreams about field and barn finds, and the appearance we found these things in is a reminder of one of the best days of our lives.
I love my well worn 47 IH (the one on my profile pic). I put a heavy coat of wax on it every few months, cutting my hands on the jagged rusty spots, partially because I've got 18 month old and 3 month old little boys, and just bought a house, but also because I'm a gearhead and know the drivetrain, brakes, suspension and function come first. It has a brute of a 345 in it with a Pertronix and Sig Erson cam, a T 19 wide ratio, and a Ford 9". This thing hauled an engineless 56 Coronet wagon on a car trailer with my 64 triumph in the bed in July of 2011, from Boulder, CO, to Sanford, FL (that's 2000 miles), at 70 mph and got 11.5mpg. My point? ...It works like a bastard! For 3 years now, I've driven it every day. I turn the key and drive, hauling my toolbox from place to place with it as a mobile Auto/Diesel/Motorcycle tech. Haven't done anything but put oil and gas in it.
If I "finish" the thing like everyone seems to want to tell me to do, I loose the original look, the stenciled US Forest service logos from the doors, and the story of this thing's long hard existence. I have to spend about $10k to do the bodywork and paint (not to mention find the time between changing diapers and framing in the laundry room so I don't get paint overspray on my wife's clothes again), I have to insure it as a $30k vehicle, I need to buy bigger property so I can build another garage to protect it and still be able to build shit in my garage. I can't park it anywhere without fear of it being stolen, and I won't use it for it's intended purpose... It's a friggin truck. I can't afford a toy and a truck, so I merged the two. I have a functional hotrod, ...that I love, ...daily. But please, if you're handing me a briefcase full of money, feel free to give me the list of things that it needs (that I know you're about to walk around it rambling off) to be "finished".
For all you guys out there who criticize without thinking first, how often are you driving your hotrod? Can you work in your garage or is your toy in the way? How many miles could you possibly be enjoying it only driving it on the 4th of July, Labor and Memorial day? Was kind of return are you getting from your investment? 3-7 days of use, for a year worth of storage, maintenance, insurance, sta-bil, tires every 1000 miles because they keep dry rotting before the little tits are worn off the treads?!!!
I'm a hardcore genuineite. I involuntarily wretch when I see faux-tina's, rat-rods, and anything that's not what it pretends to be, ...especially people. My truck and my Polara aren't trophies to me. I don't park them in the car corral at car shows. I'm passionate about my rides and what others think doesn't hold a lot of weight. They're for MY enjoyment. My 1 year old son doesn't care about the rust, he just want's to "ride?! ...RIDE?!" in my "CUT" (his take on the word truck and it's always yelled, never spoken).
If you look at your wrist right now, and see a watch that's worth more than the $500 that I paid for the shell of my truck, if you spent thousands to Faux-tina your ride, or if you drive your bone-ass-stock late model Corvette to show's and leave your wife and kids at home because there's only enough room in your car for your "pouting kid" doll that needs to be leaned against the fender and the camping chair you're going to sit in while criticizing those around you ...you're not going to get it, because you're into trophies, appearance, and impressing others.
If you couldn't tell, I'm a little tired of people telling me my truck "...will be really nice when finish it". I'm getting a bumper sticker printed up that reads "As soon as you're done criticizing my truck, we should discuss your wife's appearance".
Genuine patina is just fine. The bright orange rust that comes with it (and the constant comments about "finishing" it) suck. Some of us want to put a shine on what we've got, and freeze time on the cosmetic thing, so we can continue to enjoy the ride we love for it's intended purpose, driving it. Maybe it'll get painted, maybe the shed, Polara, mortgage, or a box of diapers will put it off yet another day. Point is, "finishing it is f'in expensive!" Driving it isn't.
Thanks for reading. By the way, To give a legitimate answer to your question; A periodic coat of Ospho will keep the orange rust away. It may leave white streaks on the paint that need to be rubbed out. It trails like WD-40 in the rain for a bit. Farmers us it on machinery to prevent the chalky orange rust. It'll put the brakes on the deterioration of your metal indefinitely, ...or at least until the kids are out of diapers or off to college. Whenever your "Someday" happens to arrive".

Well said, very refreshing, isn't it funny how many people think they know whats best for YOU! In my world, only one person knows whats best for me, take a guess!

Lot of old names on these old posts that I don't see post anymore...
Actually, a lot of them, don't think they've all been banned, have they?
    Witness Protection?
    Alien Abductions?

Love old posts.... They remind me of how much I haven't gotten done on my projects in years.

Mr. Zilla this is only your second post. Yet it is full of wisdom and common sense. I almost didn't finish this rant of a thread. But your post and a few others actually GET IT !
I also hate fake patina...actually fake anything, including people. But real rust on a vehicle is like real scars and wrinkles on a dirty ole man. It's something earned and something to be proud of.
I hope the original poster decides to improve his old Ford mechanically and use WD 40 or something similar to temporarily preserve his new ride, and enjoys it as the car attracts attention for what it is.

You drug a 6 year old thread up for that? WTF? Rust sucks, it's stupid, to let it exist on your vehicle is stupid. There is no other answer.

  20. Sorry - But RUST is NEVER something to be PROUD of on your car.

Silly me. I didn't even notice this thread started six years ago. The ole Ford has either been restored and repainted some shiny new color or it's ready for the "sitting and rotting thread."

  22. I hope so. I'll be glad when this "rusty cars are cool" bullshit is over. I can't believe it has lasted this long.

I didn't say to be proud of rust, I actually answered his question about how to stop it from persisting. Ospho. It's a wipe on rust inhibiting primer. Better than WD-40 because it lasts longer. Not terribly expensive.
Would you meet a girl and immediately preach about the benefits of a tan, breast implants, makeup, and liposuction because you don't like that she doesn't look "factory fresh"? If so, your problems run deeper than all the cosmetic repair in the world is going to fix.
I love my truck like I love my girl. You fall in love with it/her, and nothing else is more beautiful. Scars, imperfections and all. Function before form. All the surface preparation in the world won't polish a turd or turn your 82 Citation into a 57 Chevy.
Here's a good metaphor for you; I'd rather have a low-maintenance girl that I really like looking at, will get her hands dirty helping you tackle a household project, and does all the nasty things pornstars have made you wish you could try since puberty, than a high-maintenance supermodel who's a bitch, afraid to break a nail, expensive, doesn't put out, and everybody wants to steal from you.

Rust is exactly like cancer. It grows and it destroys what it's formed on. Have you ever met anyone that actually wanted to preserve their cancer? Me neither.
    Think about it ...

  25. Very well put Ed - and it shows why the comparison to an actual person is completely irrelevant and useless.

You are funny, but you suck with metaphors, like Special Ed said,

But you had already pretty much lost me at...

And you let your kids around it? For shame.

    We can't all be rich.

  28. Andrew kerosene and used oil will help it keep from getting any worse, but it will darken it a bit and it will look like it has dew on it.

Now here is something that may amaze you. I'll just about bet that it has paint under the surface rust. You may actually be pleasantly surprised if you CLR it or take some fine wet sand paper to it. old paint is far more intriguing then old rust.

It's not about rich, it's about pride, and keeping the vehicle intact. Plenty of guys have eradicated the rust and did it on a serious budget.

dude it's been 6 years.. I think he may have figured it out or gave up by now.
