I am putting a Muncie 4 speed behind a 270 dodge hemi, I have a hot heads adapter to get it done. Instructions say it was designed for borg and beck pressure plate. I am not sure what that means??? Will any pressure plate work, or only borg and beck??? Are there any difference in the mounting or function??? I know it has 3 fingers as opposed to multiple spring steel fingers. Thanks Sent from my SM-S327VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A borg & beck has three stamped metal fingers. a long has three skinny forged fingers that have a small adjustment bolt where they contact the throwout bearing. The diaphragm has a spring that has slots for fingers. You could use any type that fits on your flywheel.
I believe it has to do with the pressure plate bolt pattern. The other typical pattern is Long style. As I recall, one has 3 groups of two bolts, the other has 6 bolts equally spaced. I don't remember which is which. Ray
The Factory Dodge pressure plate may have been a B&B, but a diaphragm should be available for replacement, as they have the same evenly spaced bolt pattern, and come with either straight or bent fingers to match any T/O bearing. Just match the finger height to the B&B.
A raised finger diaphragm generally uses the same TO bearing as a B&B , ( short bearing) a flat finger diaphragm uses a longer bearing , there may be a difference in the clutch fork geometry designed into your bellhousing so mockup will be necessary ....
Why try to reinvent the wheel when Hot Heads specified what pressure plate the kit was designed for? Then we get another question concerning how to get the cobbled together wrong parts to work and a complaint about their kit thread.
I’d just call Hot heads and ask them rather than take advice from a random stranger on the internet Sent from my iPad using H.A.M.B.
There are two good reasons B&B and Long pressure plates haven't been factory OE for over 40+ years; higher cost and pedal effort vs a diaphragm. I'm running a diaphragm on a '51 Merc B&B-pattern flywheel using the stock '51 T/O bearing, and on a FE Ford in place of the stock Long, again using the stock T/O bearing. Simply match the finger heights and choose bent or straight finger, depending on the T/O bearing size. Chances are the new replacement diaphragm will cost less and be made in the USA vs the new or rebuilt B&B, or Long. Mine were.
