I need to know if $200 bucks is a good deal of a set of SBC 202 heads. I would have to eat the cost to take them to a machine shop to get checked out but if they were bad the guy would refund the money.

    What do you think?

That's a fair price in the NE. Those heads are getting scarce.
I had a set that needed major work and I swapped them to a machine shop guy for a rebuilt set of 194's. The smaller heads didn't make a difference on my street driven hotrod.

Hey Out Law - it depends on the cast number - If you can figure out if they were a performance head it would help in making up your mind

You can get a pair new of non-performance heads for around 400 bucks. You'll probably spend at least another 200 at the machine shop and in parts on the used heads. You can also get new vortec heads for around 450 (of course you'll need a vortec intake, rockers, pushrods) but the vortecs kick ***.

just because they have 202 valves doesn't necessarily mean they are great heads - someone could have put them in **** heads, just check out the cast numbers - there are many websites that list them

I'm gonna have to agree with Tudor here. I'm a big SBC geek, and with the initial purchase price, plus what you end up paying to freshen those heads you could damn near buy a set of vortecs, or even some world products torquers or something like that. I think that would be a lot better way to spend yer dough.

I recently spent 150 for a single double hump head for my 327 (then took both to the machine shop for hardened seats). It matches the casting number of the other one and even the date code is a match. But keep in mind, I was trying to get my truck back together for Paso and it was cheaper than buying a pair of heads and a hell of a lot quicker than ordering anything out of a catalog.
