If anyone wants to really go off the reservation I have a brand new Radio Shack circa 80's compact cassette under dash unit. Complete in the box.

  4. I've always had a soft spot for 8-tracks since I grew up in the time when they were still popular.
My Dad always had a ton of 8-tracks in the phaux-alligator carrying cases. In his truck he stored the box behind the seat, and in his car he would lock them up in the trunk.
He's the only one I've ever known to have a number of Bo Diddley and B.B. King albums on 8-track. Wish I could find a few of them now! He also had a bright pink 8-track tape of Al Hurricane. They were an instrumental group that did a lot of 50s and 60s classics like "Red River" and "Tequila". I insisted we listen to that tape every time me and Pops went somewhere. Wore it out.
I put an 8-track in my Buick way back in '99 and it's still there. It is one of the most commented on things I have in the car--that and the American Graffiti Soundtrack tape in it. You can just see it a little off center under my steering wheel.

I think the 8-track, cheap, fun days may be over though, as I've noticed prices on players and even tapes is getting ridiculous. Thrift stores are still the best place to find bargains. E

  5. Yep, slowly pull on it, pick up speed and then give it a gentle yank and let go!

I usually share a booth or two at the Portland swap meet with a buddy and we always have 8 track tapes we have collected over the years and we always take them back home with us.

Last year I started telling people (after a few beverages) that the first 5 were free if they sign up for the tape a month club where I send them a classic choice for 5.99 per month for 12 months (the old Columbia tape gig). No one went for it but they had a good laugh.

One of our neighbors from the north took most of the home with him on Sunday for next to nothing as by that point they had sat in the rain for days, like that would hurt them.

I found a Jan and Dean 8 track under the seat of the Olds the other day while trying to figure out why the seat wouldn't slide back if anyone wants it.

I did the "Columbia Gig" once or twice. Went for vinyl though.

I remember one of my favorite tapes dude was like this Cheech and Chong comedy album man where they were like sneaking people into the drive in in the trunk of their chebby you know, and Chong had to go so bad his back teeth were floating...man I laughed at that skit man like every time I listened to it, oh wow man, those were the days.

Used to use a bic pen to turn the reels in the old 8 tracks to tighten them

You have 8-track tapes that still work! My payers were real good at eating them and I sold the last working one that I possessed a number of years ago. I still have some of the players though a couple of underdash Craigs and in dash AM\FM\8-track Ford, Gm and I think I've even got a Mopar or two hanging around.

Just so you'll know...when I was a kid (prime 8 track time), we never had 8 tracks, because they were crappy. My dad put an inverter in the family wagon, and we had the Dynaco amp and Ampex reel to reel tape deck (and a pair of speakers) in the car on trips. Once I took a nap with my head on the take up reel...boy did that make a mess!

Squirrel, did you know if you take your broken 8 track tapes and splice them together they paly perfectly on a 4 channel reel to reel? The trick is still finding 4 channel reel to reels but it makes a killer garage stereo if you do.

Far out man, Cheech and Chong were the best.
Billy, have you heard the saying "if you can remember the 60's, you weren't there".
    I remember, cuz I didn't inhale.

I remember seeing those somewhere, but that was after my time worrying about stereo.

I remember the old Kraco stuff ( all I could afford ) in fact have a new Kraco underdash stereo FM RADIO (not converter) to go in my model A build along with some new chrome 6" speaker grills ( the ones I couldn't afford back then)

Let me know by who and I will have a look. Most of what I have are the two basic kinds of music, Country and Western.:) D

  22. Not trying to hijack this thread but I'm looking for a 4 track player that's pre '64. And some good tapes to listen to if anyone has anything.

I had to think about these and where I saw them. IIRC it was around 1966, an older brother of a girl I went to grade school with had them in a new Mustang, he took me for a ride but I don't remember hearing them, I do remember hearing that 289 and the 4 speed.

heh...my brother just posted on fb that he scored a couple thousand 8 track tapes from a friend....he figures there are at least a hundred good ones!

(he is planning to put an 8 track player in his wagon, too)

  27. Good luck... Earl Muntz came out with the 4-track in '62, so you'll be looking for one of his original Muntz units. And the decks and tapes were never common even back then; Muntz had a limited distribution license from only a few record companies and limited marketing of the decks. By '67, 4-track tapes had all-but-disappeared due to the success of the 8-track. He quit making the decks in 1970.
