primer and clear coat ?'s

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Jun 1, 2005.

  1. can anyone tell me what exactly is meant by 'high build' primer

and what is the difference between 'medium' and 'high' solids clear and why would you use one instead of the other??

thanks for answering my remedial paint questions.

Well high build (high fill) primers are your filler primers something you would use over body work (body filler) usually a urethane or a polyester resin system, my tip stay away from the polyester ones they tend to crackout the urethane ones are more money put work better and are of better quality. One easy check is to fill the weight of the can remember resin is expensive and heavy solvent is cheap and light so the weight will tell you the fill quality. Clearcoats are rated by their solids percentage. Resins are what make up clear and the higher the percentage the more will be left on the panel cleared after drying. again solvent is cheap and resin is not so in a given gallon of clear the more resin it has the more you will pay, but the less you will need to achieve the same mil thickness per coat.
    Hope this helps some.:)
