Will it be satisfactory to shoot primer over some newly fabricated bare spots and some clean, but old paint on an A frame? Meaning, paint the complete frame in primer and re-visit/finish paint after ch***is mock-up and re***embly? I'm a paint noob, but have done some small stuff with good results. Input appreciated.

You need a self etching primer to cover the bare metal spots, which you can put over old paint (If it is prepped correctly... feathered out and scuffed up well.) I would just get the whole frame stripped down and do it right.

Some people do epoxy over bare metal too. I wouldn't though, it's too porous and can let moisture in.
