I initially planned on using epoxy primer, either red or black. I have been looking at eastwood's single stage urethane satin rat rod black kit which comes with the epoxy primer for around $200.00 Yes, I'm in the clear lake, webster area on the southeast side of houston. Thanks for the offer. I don't know if that would work too well though since my project is up in east texas at the moment. I go there on my 3 day weekends I have one HF gun that I haven't used yet but I will try it on a test panel at some point to see how it looks. I'm also looking at Eastwood's gun's because they just started a pretty good sale on them. thanks everyone for your response!
Okay I'm still in the process of choosing my primers and body fillers and such. There is so much info out there. I believe I want to use the Eastwood Black or red epoxy 1:1 primer since it's affordable and they say it is isocyanate, lead, and chromate free as well as being easily sandable unlike other epoxy primers. Can anyone give me some insight on this?
I know this has little to do with a gun. Choosing your materials isnt that hard, most people have their preference. why are you going to epoxy it first? thats not necessary. are you blasting, dipping or sanding the paint and rust off? the HF gun with the fat tip is fine for primers. It sounds like this is your first car, I wouldnt put your money towards a high priced gun at this time.
Yes this will be my first car and I want to get it ready to drive in time for lonestar roundup which is one year from now. I am planning to media blast (coal slag) a lot of the "unseen" areas like the underside of the car and I have already sandblasted the firewall since it is a very strong area of the car and there is no concern about warpage. I will DA sand all the other areas of the car with 80 or 120 grit to remove all the different layers of paint on the car. It has about 3 colors i believe that have been sprayed on it over the years. white, green, and black. I have seen some possibly original red oxide primer but I still will sand that off wherever I can get to it in order to spray fresh primer. I am wanting to epoxy it because I keep hearing that it is the good thing to use for a foundation for all the other layers that will go on top and it will seal the best. Plus I will use it as a sealer again when I get the body work done. Also because the car will sit in primer for a long time before it gets topcoated and it could end up being transported back and forth between houston and east texas for different reasons. From what I understand, epoxy would be the best choice because it is the best long-term primer for a car that could be outside in primer only and get rained on. I will try not to let that happen but it is not my place that I am using and it could be put outside at some point in the future. I know I would have to sand it and respray epoxy again once I got ready to continue the process though and that is okay with me. My plan is sort of like this : 1. I will finish mocking up my later model engine and transmission and then take it all back out once i'm happy with the fitment. 2. Build a body rotisserie and mount the body onto it. 3. Blast the underside of the car and finish taking care of rust and/or new steel patches. 4. Spray the body with primer while on the rotisserie. 5. Within the top coat window, spray the bottom of the car body with decent paint and also a layer of rubberized undercoating. Spray the engine-side of the firewall and all the interior panels like floor, toeboard, dash, ceiling with whatever topcoat i choose at that time (maybe satin black). The trunk lid, hood, fenders, and doors will be epoxy primed seperately and wait for their turn to be worked on. 6. I will leave the body alone for a while and work on the frameat this point. Sandblast the frame, mock up my s10 rear axle, epoxy prime everything, paint, install rear suspension and install Mustang II as well (removable components will be painted seperately of course). 7. Once the frame is ready, place the body back on the nice rolling frame. I'm not trying to have a mile deep show quality finish but I do want to make sure I use decent quality stuff (not expensive!) where it really counts. I got a quote for primer, base and clear for dupont chromasystem the other day and all that stuff was $1400(too expensive for first car project!). that doesn't include masking tape, masking paper, filters, or anything else for that matter. I was hoping to spend maybe 500-600 on the paint supplies (not including consumables like sandpaper, tape, etc. ) That's why I am looking at the Eastwood.com stuff. Epoxy primer is around $100 and then the urethane basecoat is around $160 and the urethane clear is another $160 or so I think.
Some damn good tips on this thread! Applied some to my own techniques. Neat thread find! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
lots of good info on selecting a gun. but, sounds like you need to do more research on what your final paint brand/type will be then select primers/sealers that are fully compatible. also, search here on recommended paint, etc for low buck first time painters. also, look at www.learnautopainting.com/undercoats.htm --the hardest part of the first paint project is trying for it to be near perfect when done. this is a learning experience, expect problems but, don't let them stop you.
It seems the Devilbiss Startingline is a popular choice. Did some research as I am painting my car soon and You can pick up a Devilbiss 2 gun kit on Ebay for about $125.
I blow primer through my 9.99 hf purple gun, and some single stage too. It lays it out fine for a cheapo gun. Anything I want a good job on I have other guns.
