I am going to be starting my Ford v8 flathead for the first time after a fresh rebuild. I am running two Holley 94's. What is the best way to prime the carbs and fuel system?

    Thanks, John

An electric fuel pump does the job fast and easy. With a mechanical pump, just add gas from a small can and line through the 94 bowl vents. :)

  3. I agree with the electric pump being the best, but also understand you wouldn't be asking this question if you had one.

I am not a fan (keep in mind this is just my opinion) of filling through the vent tubes. I have done it before and ended up overfilling the carb. I prefer to simply remove the fuel line from the carb and rig up a temp line and fitting that will allow me to pour gas down the temp feed line into the carb. Basically, you are fiilling the carb through the same opening the fuel pump feeds the engine, this way the float stops the flow of gas when the bowl is filled to the correct level (assumiing your float level has been set correctly). You now have a fully primed carb. At this point, I pour gas down the line that comes from the fuel pump to the carb (up near the carb end) ... this fills the pump and the line from the pump almost to the carb.

Now just attach the original (now gas filled) feed line to the carb (that is also now filled up with fuel). The suction from the pump, once the engine is fired, will now pull fuel from the tank.

This is what works for me, it is obviously NOT the only way to do it but it is the way I do it.

    Good luck

Just take the off the gas cap and blow into the tank. You should be able to build up 2-3 psi enough to push fuel into and fill the carbs.

I have a 3 holleys on my 350 with a mechanical pump and I just turned the motor over with the starter and no ignition until there was pressure on the fuel gauge.
Turned on the ignition and it fired right up.
