  1. I was out in the garage around 4:00 this afternoon putzing with my Merc.
(Maybe this is not too far O/T.)
Nice day, garage door open. We are in the flight path for Mpls, St Paul Airport & few smaller local airports. My ears perk up, I hear what I know ain't no airliner or Lear jet. I zip out to the drive way. 4 F-16s in formation off the deck heading straight east, right down my street.:) Damn it was cool. I miss not living in Wichita. Just for a second I wondered why they were here, Not a normal occurance in the Twin Cities. Oh yeah, Obama was here today. They must be his ****** home.
What ever a person may feel about the President or the condition of the country that made me proud as hell to be an American. We still got it licked!!:D

Waaaayyy back in the mid '80's I was real lucky to work at a place next to Moffet Field when the Blue Angels were doing their "warm-ups" for the Air show that weekend.
There is nothing like the sight of an F-16 flying low "above the deck" and then going straight up over your head.

My son is at a dance right now and he is the "expert" on who flies what.
Oh yeah...he's 14 and has been using Flight Simulators since the age of 5 starting with Sierra Pro Pilot.
I'll see a plane and ask him what it is and he can pretty much tell me the Mfg,make of the plane and if he's "flown" it or not.

  12. I live just east of Whiteman AFB. Lots of neat stuff flies over. Usually real low. Here's a steath that flew over the shop.

I'm in Minneapolis as well. I happened to be driving by the airport yesterday when Air Force One flew right over my car. They don't mess around on takeoff, that thing was climbing like a fighter jet. :)

Seesko - as a life-long Wichitan, I know just what you mean!
When I go elsewhere, I always wonder WTH are the airplanes?
We get so used to hearing and seeing them here in the Air Capital....

Great times for a boy in Calif.:D AHHHHH........Lippy

We used to live in the flight path for Castle AFB...I can still remember the sound of the B 52's (Airplanes, not Love Shack) as they would fly over.

It certainly makes you stop and look up...and appreciate being here.

I remember a few years ago doing some site work in a mobile home park that was in the flight path for our smaller airfield. A couple times a year they bring in the vintage bombers from the Confederate Air force or some such organization. This particular time I hear a sound that was very distinct from the normal air traffic. I look up and see a Messerschmitt bomber flying overhead! Twin V12 Engines. At the same moment the 70 something neighbor comes running out of his place... He looks up and, for a split second, I caught a glimpse of the man that flew 22 missions over Germany during WWII. Said he hadn't heard that sound since he was stationed in England during the war. Learned a lot that day.

Some time back in the middle fifties, my dad and I were doing something out side. Back then it was not unusaul to hear sonic booms as Carswell AFB was not far away. I commented that the booms were awfully loud. Dad said, "At least they are ours. Lots of places in the world can't say that." Yep, proud to be AMERICAN.

  19. We moved to Wichita from Cheney when I was about 5. Around 1959-60.
Lived in the Eastgate area from 62 til the summer of 65. Stearman Elementary.
I loved living in the flight path of McConnell AFB. The B-52's B-47's It was awesome. Couldn't even hear the TV when a 52 rumbled over head. The flying gas stations and all the Cessna,Beech,Boing,Lear Jet stuff.
I remember the T-Birds flying f-100's at the base one year. F-105's F-4's. All those smokey, loud planes. I really miss the war planes here. It was a great place for an airplane nut to grown up.
And I agree 296, a WW 2 bomber with round engines is hard to top:D

I was living in Marietta GA about a mile from the Lockheed plant, one day the ground started shaking, sounded like an airliner about to crash but a non changing pitch, found out from a person who knew another person they had raptor engines down there testing them, Nothing else could have made that sound. It was so loud that people were running out of other apartments. They still won't admit what they were doing back then. must have been cl***ified or somrthing. :D

i remember we would go to the kern river here in california, we would swim in the calm part of that crazy river. anyhow i remember we both turned around and looked up, two f-14 tomcats fly right over our heads! SCREAMING! the coolest thing ever! great story seesko!

  24. last year, I was working just south of the flight path to McChord afb here in Tacoma Wa. I had a perfect view of the Air force Thunderbirds comeing in for an air show. Also got to see a bunch of other old warbirds fly in. 6 p-51's and a p-38 in formation is awesome. P-38 leading with the p-51's, 3 on each wing in a "V". wished I had a camera

I was at King Fahd International Airport, during Desert Storm. About 70 miles south of Kuwait. Anyway, One night at about 10:00 our first shirt came in and said.... Put on your Chem. suits... So we knew it was starting.... we put on our stuff and went out side.... our tent was about a mile from the flightline... we had a perfect view. Stood there and watched F-16's take off.... full after burner... one after another for at least an hour..... That was awesome.....

I am not from here, I'm originally from England, but I love this country, and am proud to call it home.

  27. You speak volumes "Flathead". That gets me right here!:).

B-17 has to rank with a 36 or 40 Ford for being a timeless beauty.

  28. One of those buzzed my house en route to Mt Rushmore a couple years back.

Also got to witness Blackbirds taking off, straight up and the loudest sound ever.

    Great thread.
I lived in socal as a kid. El Toro Marine base only miles away. F-4's flyin over all day every day. When they'ed BOOM, Mom would say "one lump or two?" like they were coming for coffie. I miss that, and Mom.
dad took us to the Chino air museum all the time and we got to see the only flyable A6-M zero in the air. Then the guy who was ground crewing told us to come up and touch it while it was running. Direct contact with history. That was the late 60's. Try letting a kid touch a running plane in the new millinium. eeeeeeeesh
