Details, what type of car 12v? 6v? Stock tank? Stock sender?

  3. fuel gauges and fuel senders need to be matched in ohms range , so without knowing what you have there is no way anyone can help you

I got the same problem with mine and it's a matched set. Took the sender out of the tank try adjusting it but still the same 1/2 tank reading.. But I added a new ground wire from the sender to the frame and got a 3/4+ reading I would try adding a ground wire. Joe

Is this a new sender? Get a digital volt-ohm meter - pull the sender and check the ohm readings as you move the float through it's entire range. You may have a dead spot in the windings of the sender.

If you are using a GM gage from the mid 60s or later, with an original 50s sender, it will do that.

We're all just guessing though....you need to provide a lot more info if you want a useful answer
