    Hey all.
I am new to this forum here and am stumped on an issue with my 1953 ford customline

I had to let it sit for about a month and a half but would fire it up every couple of days and drive around the block just to keep the fluids moving.

Well took it for a drive and out of know where it wont syncro shift from 2nd to 3rd anymore.
It is obviously the 3 on tree but is the 1953 merc trans with o.d.
It still shifts fine using the shifter but wont syncro from 2nd to 3rd

Any ideas whats up because I am stumped and cant seem to figure out whats going on??

I'd pull the side cover and have a look. The brass blocker ring could be worn out. Push the blocker ring toward the front. There should be a gap between the ring and the teeth on the end of the main drive gear. If it's worn out, there won't be any. The ring also shouldn't be able to turn independently of the synchronizer body. Other than that, you'll have to take the box apart and inspect everything.

In addition to what Mizza Pete had to say, that oil could also be the culprit causing a lot of grief too. I myself have had BOTH THINGS hang my 53 Ford Truck gear box seize up . scrubba

You said it will shift 2-3 with the shifter, but won't "sychro", can you be more specific? Are your gears grinding?

  7. I know it must be an Age thing. In my 60+ years I've never heard it said "won't sincro but shifts fine. Beyond just the terms of speech what I can tell you is that sitting most likely had nothing to do with the change in how it works or don't work. Also removing the side door on the gear box may or may not let you see what the issue is. Even if you can tell what's wrong you can not fix it while in the car. Do yourself a favor and just remove the tranny, then open it up. Bottom line is it has to come out to be repaired.
