I goofed and didn't post the last update to the Target 550 build diary. So here are 2 of 'em.

Finishing touches on the carrier and the power package:
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/206_finishing_touches_carrier_&_power_package/index.html

and Riveting the tail skin to the subframe.

    http://www.target550.com/gallery/207_riveting_tail_skin_to_subframe/index.html

As usual, great photos by Doc Freud. The tail assembly is the only part of the liner left at Hume's shop. The rest of the car is in Marlo's possession with a whole list of stuff that has to be finished...but at least it's outta the shop and last minute progress is being made before testing begins. We'll have an announcement on that asap.

Target 550 Post 207: Finishing the tail and a visit with Danny Thompson.

This post has a couple of topics. The first shows the final details in finishing the liner's tail section and an explanation of the process and why it's been so labor and time intensive. The second covers a visit by Marlo Treit and Glenn Freudenberger to Danny Thompson's shop and gives a little insight into their discussion.

    Good stuff!

  5. Thanks for sharing Danny project with us Ray! It is neat seeing that car being resurrected.

Post 209: Jim Hume's last piece of tail. Well, maybe not quite so literally, but there's an element of truth to it. Hume is just about finished with the tail section of the Target 550 streamliner. It's full of compound curves, rivets and inaccessible areas. But it's nearly done.

You can also see what some new body files can do for an expert metal shaper like Hume:

Update 210: At the 2013 Bonneville NW Reunion, the Saturday mid-day activity was a tour of the shop that now houses the Target 550 liner. I wandered around aimlessly, shooting off my camera from time to time and getting photos of the liner and those visiting. I think we all had a good time. I didn't add any captions to the photos, so just imagine that you're walking along with me seeing interesting stuff and people.

After many years, the last piece of the Target 550 streamliner has left Jim Hume's shop. The tail section is finally finished and with it that chapter of the story comes to an end.

Since the liner is at Marlo's shop, we'll be doing updates every other week.

Target 550 update #212: The Kevlar wheel fairings have been completed and Marlo picked 'em up in Washington and brought 'em back to his shop in Oregon. All the parts of the car are now in the same location.

These are the wheel fairings for which the originals (made from aluminum) were such a pain in the butt (almost as much so as the tail.) I believe that several sets are done and can be replaced if they're damaged somehow. At least that's the plan.

Here are a couple more photos of stuff loaded in Marlo's van:

    Target 550 update #213: Hume's new project: a 1932 Ford 3-window coupe.

Since the Target 550 liner is in Oregon being prepared for testing, Glenn Freudenberger (aka Freud) made a trip to Jim Hume's shop to see what he was up to. Check out this high-zoot Deuce coupe:

Target 550 update #215: Testing at Woodburn Drag Strip.

    Just the facts.
    1. The liner has run twice at Woodburn.
    2. According to Marlo, it's at 98 percent completion status.
    3. Video will be forthcoming (as soon as I get and edit it.)
    4. The proposed trip to Wilmington, OH has been scratched.
    5. The liner and team WILL be at Speed Week, (Aug 10-16, 2013) as plans stand now.

Here's the link to the photos shot by Jason Hosking:

Update #216: Second test at Woodburn.

Jeff Brinkley has been kind enough to share some of the photos that he shot at the 2nd test session at Woodburn. I've presented them without comment since they're pretty self-explanatory.

The test session was very successful and as I understand it, the next stop will be Speed Week on the salt flats! See ya there!

Update. It's with a good deal of frustration that I have to announce that the Target 550 streamliner won't be at Speed Week on the salt flats as previously stated. Some stuff beyond our control has forced us to move the goal post slightly. So instead of Speed Week, the liner will make its debut at World of Speed, Sep 7-10.

We're still gonna be there, but just a bit delayed.

Question I have is how the second engine is going to respond by breathing the exhaust from the first??

  22. Things happen in the race car game, we all understand. Good luck at World of Speed. I'll be cheering you on from afar.;)

I think the best answer I can give is that the intention is to have the exhaust flow underneath and outside of the intake flow through the NACA ducts.

I'm not an aerodynamicist by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm pretty sure that it's one of the things that was tested in the wind tunnel.

An announcement from the Target 550 team:
The Treit and Davenport will be running at the World of Speed. This has been announced earlier.

It will also be running at Mike Cook's Shootout.

This project has never been in a hurry up mode until the last few months. With the car in Marlo's shop in Aurora, Oregon it is much more convenient for the crew to work on it.

The test runs at the Woodburn drag strip gave valuable information regarding drivability, engine starting procedure and how to handle the car in its carrier. All of these items relate to being "user friendly." It is not known how what changes may be needed to make record attempts but after the World of Speed event decisions can be made to raise the speed. There will be a major learning curve in the first few runs. As I said earlier sensible progress is the goal for these events.

If World of Speed goes realistically Mike Cook's event can be the spring board for serious speed.

Marlo and Les are experienced racers. They will be excited if everything goes letter perfect but they will also be prepared to face teething problems.

Excitement runs high in the Target 550 shop.

We will do all possible to post happenings and results from the two meets.

Be realistic as we report the progress. The team wants to go fast but they will approach it in a controlled manner.

We will try to do a photo post in the next few day to show some of the changes since the car came from Hume's shop and the information gained from the drag strip testing.

Here's a photo of one of the chutes on the floor in Marlo's shop:

Target 550 update #217: RacePak, linkages, chutes, inspection and bailout test. Now that things are lookin pretty good for World of Speed, Glenn Freudenberger (aka Doc Freud) put a post together showing some of things that have been tweaked/changed/tested as the result of testing at Woodburn and a pre-tech inspection by a coupla helpful SCTA inspectors.

Part of the inspection was the bailout test and Korey Bligh was the "bailer." But before he did the "gettin out" part he had to get in:

We got rained out at World of Speed but if we actually have the weather reprieve that is expected, the Treit and Davenport streamliner will be running at Mike Cook's Shootout, September 12-16, 2013.

Testing of various systems and seat time will be available at this meet and there is nowhere else that we can accomplish this. We hope to see you there.

    Target 550 update 219:
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/219_ready_to_start_%20cooking/index.html

The Target 550 streamliner is ALMOST in the trailer. And it's not in bare metal anymore. We're waiting to see if the Shootout is gonna happen. In the meantime, Freud put together a buncha photos of the preparations and the new clothes. Not the emperor's clothes...these is real fancy duds. Check 'em out.

Target 550 update 220: Fuel injector bodies.
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/220_injector_bodies/index.html

Just cuz it's rained a bit it doesn't mean that the streamliner has been put under glass in a museum. Work is still progressing. Here's what I just got from Glenn Freudenberger:

Among the really choice pieces of the Treit and Davenport streamliner are the injector bodies.

When one was removed from the car I had a chance to do fotos that were never available before.

So if you want one just like it you can see the insides, program your CNC mill and make one.

There is also a short philosophy statement regarding the project.

Posts will likely be few and far between until we can do the testing.

    Wait for us. OK?

Here's a shot of the machined surface of one of the injector hats:

After Speed Week was over, I had opportunity to travel to Marlo's hanger and see the streamliner. It was totally amazing to see the car before the blue wrapper was applied. Photographs do not do justice to what one's eyes clearly see as an engineering masterpiece. Afterwards, the owner of the 32 coupe and I drove up to Jim Hume's shop. Had the privilege of assisting with some "hands on work" with Jim and my friend on his 32. Not only is Jim a skilled chassis builder, and metal fabricator, he's an accomplished woodworker. Being introduced to wood work while a 7th grader; I know craftsmanship when I see it. Am looking forward to seeing the streamliner run on the salt!

Some kool stuff has gone on even if we didn't get a chance to to run on the salt this year due to the surf being a little higher than usual. Here's what Freud posted on landracing.com:

"It is with much humility and appreciation that I can tell you the Treit and Davenport streamliner has been invited to The Grand National Roadster Show, Pomona, CA for the celebration of 100 years of Bonneville speed! That event is January 24-26, 2014
    Complete Info at www.BonnevilleCenturyofSpeed.com

We hope to see you there. We are honored.
    I will post more soon.
    FREUD"

He's right. We're the only LSR car/bike/team to be invited that hasn't run on the salt and/or set a buncha records. I'm really lookin forward to that one.
