The 40 Ford coupe is on the mend. BEFORE........ My metalman is a old time panel beater. He uses lead on the old stuff.....bondo on the "new" cars and insurance jobs. We have been working on the 40 every weekend for the past month. I help (or hinder ? ? ) as much as I can. Almost ready to get it ready to paint..... Hope to make the Moonshiners Reunion in Dawsonville GA...........same week as GG's Charlotte ... Oct. 24-25 .
Good to see it on the mend,it sure looked like a lost cause when you first posted pictures after the accident. Its refreshing to know there are still old time bodymen out there who take pride in their work and use lead. How did the engine problem in the '32 turn out? Its time for you to have a touch of good luck. Frank
Glad to see it's getting squared away. The 40's are one of my all time favorites. Here's one of my favorite ones.
I'm also glad to see the '40 almost done and that you'll be able to take it to a show still this year. Can you fill us in on what insurance comapny you have for the 40 and if the claim has been going smoothly or have you had any h***les with them.
Nice work! Looks like new. What's the story on the roadster? Didn't the 283 bite the dust around the same time? And what is the #430 crate 430 going into? Can I draw the logical conclusion?
This post pleases me. I knew it was fixable all along and now I see things are coming along nicely. thanks for the update, hope you make your target date.
What the hell did the damage!!The repair looks superb..the rear end of a`40 is so beautiful, it`s a credit to your self and your bodyman.I spent 5 long years straightening out my 40 and it brings back memories seeing yours in primer.Look forward to seeing the finished job. heres a shot of how my beater turned out.
Noticed a 40 last weekend wondered how yours was coming along. Glad to see it about ready to go back on the road. Don't change a thing.
Randy, Glad to see progresss is coming along.. Looks like you chose a good person to work the car over... are you going to paint the entire car or blend it in? I just received these pics from my dad on his 40's reconstruction job..
Duece,I pleased to see such great progress on the 4D. Good to know there are still craftsmen in the trade with the desire to do it right in the Carolinas, not just doing custom work but dead nuts restoration.(the way it should be) I know you been working hard on the Forty,,,,,,any progress on the roadster? HRP
I just put the 32 in the shed and said "Screw YOU" I will get to you later. I need to fix it but just do not have the interest in fixing it now. As you know I have owned it since the 70's and I am a 1 track focused kind of guy. Been focused my 1 track mind on the 40. Worked a bunch of extra time at work too......... Not enough time in the day anymore...... We are going to paint the entire 40. It was last painted in 1957 and there is no matching it. It will be a pretty decent "insurance type" all over paint job......NOT a Top 25 kind of job. He can do that kind of paint work but my wallet cannot stand it and I just like to drive the old 40 too much to pamper it with a high dollar $$$ paint job. I wanted high dollar body repair with great parts but the paint WILL get rock chips and road rash. His insurance company has been a nightmare. It is a small Georgia based company that lives in the past but I am sure their rates are in the present. They do not have a office or adjuster in South Carolina which makes things even more difficult.
Good to see it coming back together, i love 40's & i'm just in the throws of purchasing a 40 truck, its a do i or don't i situation at the moment.....it has everything except ch***is/running gear, bed & running boards, in other words a big job, i think i'll be on a real high when i get back from the CHRR & buy it anyway...
Congrats on getting the 4T almost ready. So, how much longer are you gonna run that old right 1/4 gl***? Looks like it has a decal or two on it that must mean alot to you. What are they?
This is a heart-warming post! Doing severe damage to another's '40 Ford should be a Federal offense. Conversely, bringing one back to its original excellent form should ensure a special place in the hereafter for artisans such as your friend. Your coupe's looking great already! Can hardly wait to see it finished. Mike

[/ QUOTE ] The old decals are Honest Charley and Wilcap. They were placed there in 1957.......when the 283 went in. It gives the 40 a patina look. The old 40 was a Chattanooga TN area Moonshiners car and Honest Charley was in Chattanooga so that is something to me. Honest Charley was famous for selling speed parts to the Moonshiners. He was like Summit is now, back in the 50's. I have been told that you could not buy Wilcap decals back in the 50's. You had to buy their product to get one and having one was a Prestige symbol....you had the "good stuff". Honest Charley was a Wilcap dealer. I have new gl*** and rubber to replace them (matching the rest of the replaced gl***) BUT have not been able to make myself do it. I did not build this car, unlike the 32 Roadster, and I feel like I am just the caretaker of the 40. I have maintained and rebuilt parts but have made no major changes. When I rebuilt the 283.....the same block and major stuff went right back where it has been for over 45 years. Same for the transmission. The only major upgate is a alternator. It was converted to 12 Volts back in the 50's.
Glad to see it's coming back together. So...you're NOT gonna be at Goodguys? If your are, we'll be the ***holes at the same place we were last year.

That's just beautiful. I love it when folks fix **** instead of crying about what happened. This post does indeed make me happy. Looks like she'll be all together very soon. The decals rock.
